From the limiting perimeters of Why? they reached for the Why not? of the mysterious. Embracing it as they did each other, they said in unison, "Mind over matter."

"This tastes wonderful," Deidre said, peeling another piece of meat off the spit.

Remembering how Sterling had gone about feeding her the night before, she teased his lips with it while slowly tracing her tongue around her own. "My turn," she murmured as seductively as she could manage, hoping he wouldn't notice that her fingers were beginning to shake.

He stared at her hard, in a most unnerving way. Then suddenly, in a swift flash of movement, she felt his grip on her wrist. She was too stunned to do more than stare back. His eyes turned an ominous shade of earth mixed with steel.

Her hand was so close to his mouth she could feel his harsh, ragged breath. Her mind constricted to pinpoint focus, until she was aware of nothing but the scent, the feel, and the frightening power of this dangerous man.

Commanding her wrist, he slowly moved it forward. The meat disappeared into his mouth at the moment she felt the touch of his lips. His mouth closed over her fingers, and she began to breathe again, too shallowly, too fast. She tried to stifle the moan in her throat but failed.

"Careful, Diedre," he warned softly. "Be very careful before you tease me like that again. We're all alone..." He nipped the tips of her fingers. "And, darlin', I like to bite..."

"About Loren." Dee could only shake her head. "I apologize for her behavior. It was inexcusable."

"No problem. She's at a tough age, but she'll outgrow it."

"Not soon enough to suit me. If I survive Loren, it'll be a miracle."

"You'll survive." He said it as if it were already a done deal.

"How can you be so sure?"

      "Because I believe in miracles."

Something warm and fuzzy and delicious seemed to spark in his eyes. Before she could deflect it, the feeling reached down inside her, filling up an empty place that life had hollowed out. She had a sudden urge to touch him, to discover if the feel of him was half as moving or good as the almost tactile sensation his gaze created.

With difficulty Dee broke the visual bond and hoisted a large fern from the box on the porch.

"Speaking of miracles," she said brightly, "I don't think they extend to boxes unpacking themselves. Thanks for coming by, Rev—Matt."

Reaching up to hang the fern on a hook, she missed by several inches.

When she stood on tiptoe and strained higher, Matt edged closer, his voice oddly tight. "I'll get that."

Their hands brushed. White cotton met naked thigh.

She felt a distinct ripple, a tingle, where they touched. Looking up at him, Delilah felt the earlier warmth inside spread. Just as sweet. Just as welcome. But intense.

      Chemical. Earthy. And something more.

This time it was he who broke their locked gazes.

Sol fingered his black eye patch self-consciously. "When you said 'I do,' this wasn't part of the bargain."

Mariah wasn't aware of her action until she'd actually gripped his wrist. It put her hand close to his eye patch. The strip that held it in place slashed his dark, frowning brow and looped behind his white dress cap.

Sol was too still; she wanted to move from his pinpoint glare, but fought the urge. The moment was too crucial for her to back down.

"I think that patch bothers you, Sol, a lot more than it does me."

"I don't doubt it, because it bothers me a helluva lot." He gazed hatefully at his crutches. "They say I'll never walk without these."

      "Do you believe it?"

      "I don't want to."

      "But do you believe it?"

      "No."

"Then neither do I." Somehow, she found the courage to find out exactly where she stood with him. "If you want out because you married me with the idea we'd never meet, or if I'm less than what you'd hoped for—"

      "I didn't say that!"

"No, but that doesn't mean you didn't think it. If that's the reason you're trying to run me off, why you'd rather spend your time glaring at me instead of... of kissing me, then fine. We both know you bought into this marriage without either of us certain what we were going to end up with, and, and—" Her voice caught on a sharp emotional chord, her doubts rolling out before she could stop them.

      "Mariah, please, don't do this."

"No, you please be quiet and just listen to me." She couldn't believe her own words, but she was glad to have them said and done with. "If you want out, consider yourself out. But if you expect me to jump ship because your body's taken some abuse, then you've got a lot to learn about the woman you took as wife, Mr. Standish."
