They gazed deeply into one another’s eyes. In moments like these, Stephanie couldn’t imagine a world without her mate at her side. How had she ever wanted normal, when she could have him?
“As long as you’re there with me, I can handle it,” she replied.
Fate released her and slapped her on the backside. “Duty calls,” he said with a wink.
Though she wanted to drag him away and spend a week in bed, Stephanie couldn’t disappoint Lord Osmond and the Immortals by failing to carry out the duties they entrusted her with.
Stephanie walked into the chamber, expecting a crowd, and slowed when she saw who was present. Wynn stood in front of the judge’s table, and Lord Osmond sat behind the table, in one of the two chairs reserved for the co-judges. Stephanie’s brothers stood to the side, along with Karma, two Immortal guards, and the ten interim representatives chosen by the clan leaders.
Her heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t expected Wynn’s trial to occur this soon.
All eyes turned to her. She had to be who her people needed, whether or not she was ready. With a deep breath, she strode to the table and sat beside Lord Osmond.
“Demon-sis,” Rhyn whispered the new nickname her brothers had given her.
She eyed him, and he smiled.
Stephanie’s gaze went to Wynn, who stood – relaxed, calm, and unreadable. Warmth bubbled within her. She’d never particularly cared for her father before learning he’d traded his godhood to save those he loved.
“What are the charges?” she asked.
The family historian, Tamer, stepped forward and dropped a book four inches thick in front of her.
Stephanie flipped open the cover. “Are you serious?”
“These are the ones we know about,” he said and stepped back.
Her eyes went to Wynn once more, and she sat back. Fate perched himself on the edge of the table, satisfied to witness the trial of the great Immortal Ancient Wynn.
“I’ll get some coffee,” Kiki said, stepping away from the sidelines.
“Take Tamer with you,” she replied.
“Fuck no,” Tamer said. “Kiki’s the fucking secretary.”
“Tamer, help your brother get coffee, or you’ll be locked out of the study and library,” Stephanie responded calmly.
Tamer scowled but accompanied Kiki out of the chamber.
“Rhyn, get everyone chairs. I think we’re going to be here for a while,” she said.
Her half-demon brother moved without challenging her.
“Andre, you’ll be helping Lord Osmond and me.” She patted the table beside her. “Kris, what will it take for you not to use anything you learn here to fuck us all over down the road?”
Kris smiled. “A favor from a certain god will do it.”
Fate rose and held out his hand. The two whispered quietly what Stephanie assumed were the conditions before shaking.
“Finally, Karma,” Stephanie turned to the goddess who had been calm and quiet since she voluntarily confined herself to house arrest with her mate. “As the only soul reader present, your professional opinion will be required at the end of all this.”
Karma grinned and joined Stephanie at the table.
“Lord Osmond, are you satisfied with the conditions of this trial?” Stephanie addressed the Immortal beside her.
“I am, my lady,” he replied.
“Then let’s start.” Stephanie’s attention went first to the tome of crimes and then to Wynn. “I guess it’s time we heard your side of the story.”
“Where would you like me to start?” Wynn asked softly.
“At the beginning.”
He smiled faintly. “Shortly before the time-before-time ended, a deity named Wisdom came into existence …”
