“You can kiss my fucking ass, Sarah.”
Without giving her the chance to respond, I turned and stormed towards the door, throwing it open to find Adam waiting outside.
“Everything go okay?”
I nodded as he wrapped me in a large hug, the heat of my anger washing off my skin for being near him again. He was like my shelter in the storm, a man who made me feel safe – protected. I didn’t have to worry about the shadows anymore, because he was there to walk me through it.
As we started to descend the stairs, I noticed Adam’s head turn slightly to look back at the building. One eye closed quickly before opening again and odd expression came over his face. Turning, I tried to see what he was looking at, but all I saw were the glass doors that led back into the building.
“What were you looking at?”
“Hmmm? Nothing. I just thought I heard something.”
“But, you winked.”
He put his arms around me again, pulling me against his warm body. “Beautiful, I’m not sure what you think you saw, but I promise you it was nothing. Let’s go home, I’m tired of this place and these people. It’s time to move on.”
His arm stayed at my shoulder as he led me down the wide stairs and I remembered the book I had in my hand – the book that Lucas had written for me and about me. Curiosity flooded my mind suddenly about what it was that he’d marked. Opening it up, I flipped to the second page and read the words that were encircled by a heavy black line…
“This book is dedicated to the person who freed herself because she can now see the lesson that is hidden within the filth.”
