“Well done, Maddy!” Daisy called out.
“Daisy!” Maddy exclaimed happily, trotting back up the bank. “Come on—you have to help me eat my crumble!”
“Oh, no,” said Daisy. “You won it—it’s all yours!”
“Don’t be silly,” Maddy said with a smile. “If you hadn’t caught my net for me, I never would have won. And anyway, there’s far too much of it for just me.”
Daisy grinned. “Well, if you’re sure,” she said. “Thank you!”
Together, they fetched the crumble and sat down by the trees to eat it. As Daisy took her first bite, she closed her eyes. It was the yummiest crumble ever.
“Mmmmmm,” she mumbled.
“Mmmm-mmmm!” agreed Maddy.
Their mouths were too full to say anything else!
Daisy gazed over to the east, where the first hint of dawn was turning the sky from purple-black to deep blue. What a night of adventure it had been! As the crumble settled down into her tummy, she began to feel all warm and sleepy. She thought of Herbie enjoying his lovely dream, and smiled as she remembered how hard he’d tried to stay awake. Soon it would be bedtime for her, too, but she was quite sure that she wouldn’t have Herbie’s problem. Oh no! She was so tired and happy, it would only be seconds before she was fast … asleep.…
