When he was done, she looked at them and explained, “He found out about the baby.”
Everyone began to congratulate them.
“I’ve been a jerk to my family for the past six months,” he confessed.
Kathy twisted his ear, “Yes I heard. And you even got yourself hurt.”
“No physical pain compared to the one in my heart,” he said echoing her thoughts. He flicked a glance at his gathered family, “Could you all please forgive me for all I’ve put you through?”
“And Desiree?” Kathy asked, needing to hear the words from him for herself.
He scoffed, “There was never an ‘us’. She wanted more and when she couldn’t have it, she planted her poison to drive us apart.”
Kathy pulled him in for another round of kisses.
When they finished, Derek asked, “This pregnancy is just six months correct?”
Kathy nodded.
“Then it isn’t a shapeshifter,” he announced.
Silence fell.
“What do you mean?” Kathy whispered.
“A shapeshifter baby is born in three months. You’re carrying a little dragon baby, Kathy,” he added.
She and Drake exchanged glances. “How is that possible?”
Klyana nodded, “Because you’re the reincarnation of the first witch Oistrophe. You made the laws then and only you can break them or change them.”
Drake looked up, “You mean the curse is broken?”
Klyana nodded, “Derek is absolutely right. Your love broke the curse. By loving a dragon, you already broke it. There is, after all, no ritual greater than love.”
The cheers that went up around the room made every heart fill with joy and Kathy hugged him once more, unable to quite believe that after so many months of tears and angst their love had come full circle and now blossomed.
“So, I suppose there’s going to be a wedding? I want red velvet cake,” Jeanine announced tactlessly.
Her husband groaned good-naturedly and pulled her in for a kiss to silence her.
Joshua cleared his throat as he looked around at his happy sons and then he decided that now was to make an announcement of his own, “Well, make that a double wedding.”
Everyone froze and turned to look at him. Their eyes drifted to where his hand was joined with Klyana’s and understanding flashed.
Several cries of joyful triumph filled the room as they all began to move around, hugging and kissing and laughing.
Joshua beamed as he watched them. He supposed he should be grateful to Nabradia and her witches for the threat they had posed to his beloved Weirna. They were the reason he had called all his sons home and they were the reason six beautiful love stories had unfolded.
He cuddled Klyana in his arms, kissing the top of her head.
He was a grateful man. All his boys had found love and all had children of their own now, already birthed or on the way.
And they had made their peace with the Archstone shifters too. What more could a man ask for?
“Maybe a shot of whiskey smuggled in by his favorite witch right under the noses of his prying children?” Klyana asked, easily reading his thoughts.
He looked down in surprise at the small bottle she had hidden in her robes and he threw back his head and gave a full belly laugh.
Life just got a whole lot more interesting.
