The people cheer and clap their hands, genuinely excited and happy for us. For me. Michelle and Evan high-five each other, then set their sights on me.
Suddenly I’m being hugged from both sides, and I understand that this is the happiest I have ever been. Solitude was fun while it lasted, but it took fighting monsters for me to accept that I couldn’t go on like that forever.
I’ve made some friends along the way. My new family is big and, as Michelle loves to remind me, LOUD. But they’re good people. Mom and Dad would be proud. I’ve somehow managed to surround myself with the kind of people they would’ve loved being around. I married this extraordinary woman—what a favor that was, what a beautiful dream it has become.
“Michelle…” I make her pay attention as I take the old ring off her finger. “I’ve been thinking. Your mom was right. We missed a couple of steps. I think we can do them retroactively.”
She looks up, smiling. Around us, the congratulatory remarks keep pouring, but I can’t hear them. I can’t pay attention to any of them. I’m about to do something.
“What steps are we talking about?” she replies.
“This one, for starters,” I say, then take off her old wedding band and slip an engagement ring on her finger. It’s simple but sends the right message to its beholder. “I love you, Michelle. And yeah, we’re married, but still… Will you marry me? Again?”
“For realsies?” Michelle’s eyes glisten with tears.
We do that to each other a lot, but they’re always tears of happiness, of pleasure, and of sheer bliss. I’ve made it my mission to give her as many of those as possible.
“For realsies.”
“Absolutely yes! We made it this far, right?”
She laughs, and I seal the deal with a kiss. My heart is bonding to Michelle’s for good and hopefully forever. We keep saying we’re going to take it one step at a time, but there are steps, and there are steps.
This is it. Our point of no return.
Love found us and brought us together. It’s time to take that giant leap, now.
We’re ready.
