“I would say so,” Grizzly admitted while looking troubled. “Especially, if Cobra and his brothers stick around. He really wants to bust them. Thinks he’ll get something out of the deal.”
“What deal?” Gunner frowned.
Grizzly shook his head. “I may have used the wrong words there. He’s looking to get bonus points before he retires but he isn’t going about it right. As a Marshal, he feels he has to uphold his position and you guys are making him look bad. He’s bending the law to suit his own needs. He also wants to go out on a high note and he’s running out of time. He really wants to bust an MC. If he can’t get Salvaged Souls then he’ll be happy with Soldiers of Hades.”
“He’s a fucking idiot.” Cobra growled. “We aren’t breaking any laws. He can’t get anything on us because there isn’t anything to get. We may not have been legit the whole time but we are now and have been for about twelve years.”
Grizzly nodded. “We know that, but he’s bound and determined you’re dirty. He’s like a dog with a bone.”
“Yeah, well that might come back and bite him in the ass.” Cobra raised a brow at the marshal.
“That’s not the least of your problems at the moment,” Grizzly told them. “If the third man this morning was Womack, he’ll be back.”
“How can he come back with any sort of threat against us?” Gunner wanted to know.
“I can answer that,” Annie cut in. “Harry and I found a link between Womack and a street gang called Mack’s Imps. They are out of Lufkin but they are being run out of that area. They need a new place to live and Womack decided Jasper would be a good town.”
Gunner looked angry. “Well, guess what? He isn’t coming here. This is our God dammed town and we’ll defend our right to live here. We won’t start trouble but we’ll definitely end it.”
Grizzly snorted. “Yeah, good luck the Imps don’t play fair. They are nothing but street rats and will use any tricks they can to get in the door.” He gazed around at the men in the room. “Look I know you may not trust me but I do know what I’m talking about. The Marshals have been keeping an eye on them since they came to be. They have pulled every dirty trick in the book. Just warning you.”
“What kinds of tricks?” Cobra asked.
Grizzly looked disgusted as he answered, “One time, they turned the whole town against a business man, they literally forced him out of town because they wanted his business. They took it over and then ran it into the ground. All, because they thought the man disrespected them.”
“What do you think they’ll come here for?” Gunner asked.
Grizzly paused as he met Gunner’s gaze. “They’ll come here for this place. You guys have the perfect setup here. Their first step will be to discredit you with the town’s people. If they can’t do that, they’ll go after your business.”
Suddenly, Annie shook her head as she turned her computer around to show everyone a picture of a man with green eyes.
Becky gasped and paled at the same time. “That’s the guy I saw. Oh my god, that’s him.”
Gunner walked over and knelt at her feet. “What exactly did he say?”
“I think initially, this guy Womack was really mad at Blacky. I did hear him say something about how he shouldn’t have beaten me so bad, that it would make me useless, not salable, at least until I healed. Blacky said he didn’t care, he had no intentions of selling me, he was going to break me and he didn’t care if I lived or died.” She paused for a full minute as her hands shook and she set them in her lap. “The other man called him stupid. Blacky didn’t like that a bit. That’s when Blacky told the other man the price just went up. Womack told him that wasn’t the deal they’d agreed to, Blacky said he didn’t care. He had something the other man wanted and if he didn’t pay, he wasn’t going to get it. Womack threatened to come after him and Blacky said he could try but he’d be putting his own gang on the line and if he crossed him, Blacky would turn the gang against him and then let the chips fall where they may. That he had enough evidence against the other man to send him directly to hell.” Becky’s voice broke into sobs.
Patriot just held her closer and patted her back.
After a moment or so, Becky sat upright, wiped the tears from her eyes, and looked at Gunner. “Whatever Blacky had on this Womack guy, he was very afraid of. Womack told Blacky that he’d see him in hell then he turned and left.”
Harry picked up a small bundle of papers and handed them to Gunner. “I think this is what Blacky was blackmailing Womack with. We found this stuff in Blacky’s papers.”
Gunner sat for a moment and studied the evidence.” Fuck...” he swore out loud. Shaking his head in disgust, he passed the papers to Boone. “Yeah, that would be enough to send Womack to prison for the rest of his life.”
“Or get him killed by his own street gang.” Boone growled as he passed the papers to Grizzly.
Grizzly gazed down at them and after a moment, he whistled loudly. “Wow, this might be worth going after him for! This could take down the whole fucking street gang. Not to mention it might clean up the good ole boy system in Waco. Whether they know it or not, it would make the city officials clean up their act. They aren’t bad per say, but they are riding a fine line.”
Becky looked up at Patriot and whispered, “Will this Womack come after me to shut me up?”
Patriot held her closer. “Not on my watch, he won’t.”
“But he might though right?” She stared at his face. “He can’t take the chance his conversation wasn’t overheard. He had those warriors kill Blacky and he might come after me to make sure I didn’t overhear him. He knows I saw him that night. He knows I was awake. I looked right at him.” Becky was getting upset and she tried to pull away from him.
Patriot wouldn’t let her go. “Stop baby, just stop.”
“I can’t stop!” she cried out. “I can’t let him find me. If he can have Blacky’s head cut off, he can kill me with no problem.”
Patriot grasped her cheeks gently with his hands to get her to look into his eyes. “He won’t get close enough to breathe the same air as you do. I promise you that. I got you woman and I’ll always be there for you. You are mine and no one will ever hurt you again,” he stated this with a growl in his voice.
Everyone in the room turned their heads to stare at him.
Annie looked at him and then at her trembling sister.
Harry smiled hugely.
Seems the stoical doctor had found what he needed in life.
Gunner stared at his club’s doctor and stated, “It’s about fucking time boy.”

I live in a small town (population495) in Wisconsin. From my deck, I can see the Mississippi River on one side and the bluffs, where eagles live and nest on the other side. I live with my husband Dave and dog Buddy. My two children are grown and I have two grandchildren. I love to watch people and that has helped me with my writing. I often use people I watch as characters in my books and I always try to give my characters some of my own values and habits.
I love to create characters and put them in a troubling situation then sit back and let them do all the work. My characters surprise even me at times. At some point in the book, they take on a life of their own and the twists and turns they create becomes the story. Of all the stories, I could write I found I like mystery/thrillers the best. I like to keep my readers guessing until the very end of the book.
