“Yeah, I understand that.” Bart growled. “Assholes,” he whispered under his breath.
Gunner turned and walked inside.
Everyone came in behind him.
Janice sat at a table along with Liberty, Brinn and Moose. Janice glared at her dad and her brother but she wisely didn’t say anything.
Jackson was so happy to see his youngest daughter safe. “Lib, you scared the hell out of me,” he told her softly.
“Sorry daddy.” Liberty shrugged. “I didn’t know if you would even notice I was gone.”
Janice snorted.
“Janice,” Bart barked at his daughter. “Mind your manners.”
Janice glared at him but didn’t say anything. In fact, she turned her back on them all.
Out of the corner of his eyes, Jackson caught the sight of his dad’s hands curling into fists. He looked over and shook his head at his father, then turned back to the table where his family sat.
He stepped over and squatted down to be at eye level with Liberty. “I noticed baby girl. Maybe not in time to stop you from leaving but I finally got the message.”
Liberty leaned closer and whispered, “I had to find her daddy. I had to know my sister.”
“I know honey.” Jackson smiled. “What do you think?”
“I like her. Can we keep her?” Liberty giggled.
“I think we should, don’t you?” He smiled. “I’m sorry I never told you about her but I thought she died a long time ago.”
“She told me about that,” Liberty admitted. “I can’t imagine what she went through but I’m glad she found us again.”
Just as he was about to say something, his phone pinged, and he looked down at the text. It was from his PI. He got to his feet just as the front door of the clubhouse was thrown open.
Cindy walked inside for the second time in a number of days.
This may not have surprised him, but what she held in her hands did.
“Well, well, well, what a surprise this turned out to be huh?” She snarled. “The whole damn family is here. Good at least, I don’t have to track you all down.”
“What are you doing here Cindy?” Jackson asked her cautiously.
“I came here to finish the job my sister couldn’t do twenty three years ago,” Cindy spat out as her eyes looked wild. The gun in her hand wavered but didn’t drop.
“Excuse me?” Jackson growled. “What job? What sister?”
Cindy laughed out loud. “Oh, didn’t you know? Carla was my sister. A very long time ago. I left her behind when I went to New York. I left this fucking state and the dirt on the bottom of my shoes behind too. I was after a good life and that was something I could never get here. Then I met you. You offered me a good life. And that was something I wanted badly. Then I got fucking pregnant. I hated every fucking single day of those nine months. Then the kid was born and you wouldn’t let me get a nanny. I took it for almost a year before I couldn’t stand that damned kid anymore. Then Carla called me and I made her a deal. If she took the baby, I would pay her for her troubles. She thought she was on easy street but she had the worst taste in men. They took her money and left her behind.” Cindy scoffed. “I’m surprised the girl lived this long.” She looked over at Brinn, “What happened to my sister anyway?”
“She was beaten to death a few months ago.” Brinn acknowledged.
Cindy shook her head. “Like I said, terrible taste in men.” She looked back at Jackson. “After the girl disappeared, I finally got my old life back. I was happy again.” She shook her head. “Then you wanted another kid. I agreed only after you agreed to a nanny. Now after all this time, you decide to throw me out? Well, that’s not going to happen mister. I worked too damn hard to get where I was to lose it all now.”
Brinn finally surged to her feet. “Do you know the hell you put me through? Do you have any idea what your sister did to me all those years?”
“I don’t give a fuck!” Cindy screamed as she pointed the gun at Brinn. “I never did. You were just a means to an end.”
“What are you going to do, Mom?” Liberty asked quietly.
“You, your sister, your dad, and granddad have to die sweetie,” Cindy told her. “Oh, and your auntie too. I can’t have anyone left to challenge my claim to the Morgan fortune.”
“That isn’t going to happen.” Jackson shook his head. As he looked around the room he saw the men were moving in slowly and quietly to stop her.
Cindy didn’t even notice them. She was so focused on Jackson and the girls no one else mattered to her. She looked unhinged as if she had lost her mind. “Oh husband, it will happen and there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it.” She laughed wildly.
“How do you expect to get away with murder times five?” Janice asked.
Cindy’s laughter halted and again, her expression changed. “You ask me that in the middle of a clubhouse for bikers? All I have to do is point my finger at them. Say that they shot you all. I will have a bullet injury to my arm. They will believe these bikers killed you. The law is stupid enough to believe anything you tell it. Especially if it is my word against theirs, don’t you think councilor?” She looked smugly at her sister in law. “I can cry real pretty tears. I did it when my daughter was taken off the streets and I’ll do it again, when you’re all dead.” Cindy cocked her gun.
Boone moved in behind her and then grabbed the gun in her hand.
Cindy screamed and fought for possession of the weapon.
A shot rang out and the pair of them froze.
For a moment, everyone in the room halted, then Cindy began to drop toward Boone. Boone caught her then lowered her slowly to the ground. Her blood stained his shirt and when he laid her on the floor, everyone could see blood staining her blouse.
“Fuck a duck,” Gunner whispered.
Everyone could see blood dribbling from the corner of Cindy’s mouth. “Damn that hurts,” she said.
Jackson walked over to her and knelt beside her on the floor. “What the hell did I ever do to you that turned you so wrong?” he asked her.
“You threw me out,” she told him. “I wasn’t going to give up everything for nothing.”
“Did you ever love me? Ever love our family?” He had to know.
“I loved your money and power. I was fond of you but the money meant more. When you threw me out, I figured I had nothing left to lose. I was wrong and you won again.” Her voice trailed off as she closed her eyes. She breathed her last breath and the silence that followed was overwhelming.
Then they all heard Liberty begin to sob.
Jackson looked back at the table and found Liberty clinging to Brinn.
Gunner walked over to Jackson and whispered something to him.
Jackson got up and went to his daughters. He didn’t say anything but instead pulled Liberty into his arms. “I’m sorry honey. So damn sorry.”
“Me too Daddy. Maybe now she can be happy,” Liberty whispered.
Brinn got to her feet and wrapped her arms around both of them. Then Janice joined in and finally Bart walked over and did the same.
Minutes later, the police showed up and took Cindy’s body away. They took statements and finally the clubhouse was quiet again.
Moose looked over at Jackson and shook his head. “I’m still claiming Brinn. She may be your kid but she’s my woman.”
“That may not be up to her. She’s a Morgan and she needs to know what that’s all about.” Bart growled.
“It is up to me Judge,” Brinn told him quietly. “There is no evidence I’m a Morgan and as I’m over twenty one, I don’t ever have to find out one way or the other. I have a man that doesn’t care who I am or where I came from and you know what? I don’t either. I’m old enough to go where I please and I’m happy where I am.”
Bart started to say something when Jackson held his hand up. “Stop dad, she’s right. Maybe now is the time to restart our lives. I’m tired of the rat race of New York. Maybe it’s time to move to a gentler time
and place. Maybe Texas should be our new home base.”
Bart snapped his head around to glare at his son. “Are you crazy boy?”
Janice began laughing. “I think that’s a brilliant idea brother. Mind if I join you? I’m sure I can hang my shingle just about anywhere.” She looked around at the Savaged Souls. “I hear that Bounty Hunters can always use a good lawyer.”
Gunner shook his head as he smiled.
Jackson smiled as Liberty threw herself at him. “Do you mean it dad? We could move here and be a family?”
Jackson smiled at his daughter. “Yeah baby girl, maybe it’s time to be a family for a change.”

I live in a small town (population495) in Wisconsin. From my deck, I can see the Mississippi River on one side and the bluffs, where eagles live and nest on the other side. I live with my husband Dave and dog Buddy. My two children are grown and I have two grandchildren. I love to watch people and that has helped me with my writing. I often use people I watch as characters in my books and I always try to give my characters some of my own values and habits.
I love to create characters and put them in a troubling situation then sit back and let them do all the work. My characters surprise even me at times. At some point in the book, they take on a life of their own and the twists and turns they create becomes the story. Of all the stories I could write, I found I like suspense/thrillers the best. I like to keep my readers guessing until the very end of the book.
