“What the...?” Sasha exclaimed.
Leonid stepped closer and stared at the screens.
They saw the fight already underway.
Hell’s Guardians Warriors were holding off two man at the back. Rapid gunfire was happening at the front as well with the Bratva men against at least 3 of Vlad’s men.
“How...” Leonid shook his head. “Where did all this security equipment come from?”
Then on the center screen, they saw an area they didn’t recognize.
“Vlad!” Leonid sneered as he spotted him.
They watched the monitor to see Leonid’s uncle was setting C4 stacks and taping them to a wall.
“We need to leave!” River yelled.
Sasha and Leonid turned their heads to stare at her.
Looking a bit pale, River moved across the room rapidly toward another door. “Hurry, he is gonna blast that wall!” She pointed at the monitors behind the two men.
Both men looked confused but raced after her.
Just as they got to a hall through the door, the blast went off.
Leonid grabbed River and they hit the ground, he covered her body with his.
Bits of plaster rained over them as the explosion boomed.
They all laid there for a couple of minutes.
“You okay, Sasha?” Leonid asked as puffs of white dust blew over them.
“Da, I may have to change my boxers but I am all right.” Sasha actually laughed with relief.
Leonid raised up and looked back.
Rubble littered the doorway of where they had just been.
Then a man appeared in that doorway with a machine gun in his hand. “Stay where you are!”
Leonid shook his head. “Damnit, Vlad.”
“Weapons!” Vlad demanded. “Toss them over.”
The two men on the floor didn’t move.
Vlad raised his weapon. “You see this? You both should recognize it. It is a Russian Raptor. Rapid fire AK47. Or have you forgotten all things Russian, you Americanized pussies?”
Sasha growled then tossed his weapon over.
Leonid tossed his as well.
Vlad grinned. “Damn, I cannot believe I have you and sweet River.” He chortled. “Come on River, show yourself.”
River struggled to rise.
Leonid refused to move from on top of her.
“Come on, you little bitch!” Vlad taunted. “Get the hell over here. I need you for that final safe.”
“Let me up, Leo,” she whispered.
He shook his head. “The hell I will.”
“You better get him to, or your boyfriend is gonna look like Swiss cheese!” Vlad snapped. “Maybe Russian cheese,” he joked.
“Now! Leo!” River yelled at him.
Leonid let out a breath of defeat.
She peered up and gave him a wink. “I got skills, remember?”
He felt sick as he nodded and rolled off of her.
Rising up, she let off a shot from the gun that Vlad never guessed she would have.
The bullet skidded along Vlad’s right shoulder. “Ahh... you bitch!” he screamed in pain.
River clicked the trigger again to finish him off, but it made a metallic snap as white powder from the dust fell from the trigger area. “No! It’s jammed. Oh, my god!”
Leo grabbed it from her and tried to reload it.
Blood poured from Vlad’s arm. “Fuck it! I’ll blow the safe. I’m done with you!” He raised his gun. “You are the last one!” He raised the machine gun with one arm.
Leonid slid along the floor on his belly to reach his weapon. Grabbing it, he flipped on his back while lifting his gun upward and let off a shot that hit his uncle in the chest.
Suddenly, Vlad gasped and blood flew out from the back of his head as well as from his chest. Eyes wide, he came down to the floor like a dead log.
They all stared down at his prone body.
River scrambled up and grabbed Leonid’s arm in concern.
They all watched as a man stepped through the door.
Leonid jumped to his feet and aimed his weapon at the stranger.
Gasping, River stood up. She stared at the man. Their gazes locked. His eyes were the same color as hers. “Grandpa?”
He nodded and then looked behind him.
Sergi came up and stood next to him. He stared down at Vlad. “I’m sorry my friend. I know you don’t like violence. We couldn’t get in.”
Alexi handed him the weapon he just used to kill Vlad. “I did what I had to.”
River looked from one man to the other. “H-how?”
Leonid stepped up next to her and nodded. “Yes, we would like an explanation.”
Alexi shook his head.
“We faked his death,” Sergi explained. “Well, he was poisoned a few weeks ago and we arrived. Thankfully, it was in time. We had his stomach pumped. He almost died on us.”
River looked from him back to her Grandfather. “Why?” Tears slid down her cheeks. “Why?”
Alexi sighed and looked saddened. “I had no choice.”
“We hid him, to save his life, my dear,” Sergi explained. “We also knew it would bring Vlad here.”
She crossed her arms over her chest. “So, I was bait?”
“No, no!” Alexi stepped forward as he looked very upset. “I never intended that. I thought Vlad would get here far before you did. You were never to be involved.” He shook his head. “My attorney. He was paid off by Vlad’s men. He was supposed to wait another week to read the will and deliver all that I left for you.”
Sergi nodded. “As soon as I was informed that you showed up here at the farm so unexpectedly...We caught the good lawyer,” Sergi said this sarcastically, “Catching a flight to Brazil. Now, he goes elsewhere where he will not ever get a tan.”
“So...” Alexi reached out gingerly and grasped her hands. “Can you give me a chance? I missed your whole childhood.”
River looked angry as she opened her mouth.
Leonid stepped close and whispered in her ear, “Trust. He is all that is left of your family, Malyshka. Please?”
River’s mouth snapped shut and she gave Alexi a nod. Then she looked over at Sergi. “But you!”
Sergi stared at back at her with no remorse in his eyes. “Da, me. I did what I had to do as well.”
“But hiding this from me?” River seethed at him. “Not telling me he was alive? That was just wrong.”
Sergi raised a brow at her and crossed his arms over his chest. “If I had told you he was alive, you would have come straight back here and Vlad would have gotten what he needed, then he would have killed you.”
“Um...” Sasha chimed in. “She did that anyway, um Mr. Constantine.”
Sergi looked at him and then at her. Suddenly, he laughed.
Everyone turned to stare at him.
“So she did.” He shook his head. “Russian women...” He stared at Leonid. “What did I tell you?”
“Oooh!” River fisted her hands.
“You are so much like your mother,” Alexi spoke softly as he stared at her actions.
River halted and slowly looked over at him. Her anger seemed to fade as she reached out and patted his arm. “I believe you have a huge kitchen down here, do you not grandfather?”
He looked puzzled as he nodded.
“Well, let’s make some coffee. There are lots of men here that will need it.”
Leonid beamed at her and took her hand.
The couple and the older man walked down the hallway. Away from the destruction.
Sergi shook his head in disgust. “Don’t you Americans believe in tea?”
Felix came rushing in. “Sergi! You were supposed to wait for me!”
Sergi shrugged. “The danger is past Felix. Can you let up already?”
Felix rolled his eyes. “Like that’s going to happen.”
Sergi headed down the hallway with Sasha to follow t
he three that just left.
Felix called after him, “Where are you going now?”
“Well, I don’t like coffee much, but I do like happy endings,” the leader of all Bratva called back.

I live in a small town (population495) in Wisconsin. From my deck, I can see the Mississippi River on one side and the bluffs, where eagles live and nest on the other side. I live with my husband Dave and dog Buddy. My two children are grown and I have two grandchildren. I love to watch people and that has helped me with my writing. I often use people I watch as characters in my books and I always try to give my characters some of my own values and habits.
I love to create characters and put them in a troubling situation then sit back and let them do all the work. My characters surprise even me at times. At some point in the book, they take on a life of their own and the twists and turns they create becomes the story. Of all the stories I could write, I found I like suspense/thrillers the best. I like to keep my readers guessing until the very end of the book.
