      Prologue

      St. Petersburg, 1980

The small family scurried through the empty streets. The very air was fraught with tension as they rushed along. Pavel kept looking over his shoulder to make sure his small family was still undetected by the KGB and the Bratva. The city of St. Petersburg housed both organizations.

Pavel knew if the Bratva caught him now, he’d face a firing squad and he wasn’t quite ready to die yet. The fact that he knew the man hunting him down astounded him. He and Sergi had grown up together, they had been friends for years. Pavel couldn’t believe his old friend would turn on him the way he did.

It hadn’t been Pavel’s fault that the deal hadn’t gone through as smoothly as it had in the past. He made a simple mistake and a guard was dead, well three guards actually but when the second and third guards had heard the first shot, Pavel had to kill them too, didn’t he? He had to kill maybe 4 people but it had been him or them, he really had no choice in it. He couldn’t afford to get caught. He had a wife and a young son to take care of. If the Bratva caught him alive, he would wish he were dead.

When Sergi showed up and pulled a gun on him, he’d been astounded then he felt betrayed. He never should have pulled his weapon on Pavel. He’d seen Sergi fall
but whether he lived or died... Pavel didn’t know. He’d run away in a panic and now, they were scurrying through the streets with very little of their possessions, running away like rats bailing on a ship.

Pavel would rather run than face the Bratva. It wasn’t everyday a rising member of the organization was shot and left for dead. The Bratva was vengeful about things like that. He hustled his family toward the harbor. Toward the boat he had hired to take them away. It had taken a lot of money he didn’t have to pay for their passage but you did what you had to do sometimes.

He touched some of the buildings as he passed them. This place was his homeland, the only home he’d ever known. It might not be easy living here in Russia, but he never expected to have to leave this place. Both he and Greta were leaving family and friends behind, as they couldn’t even call them. They rounded the corner and from here, they could smell the sea.

They found the boat quickly enough and the sun was just coming up as the fisherman cast off the lines and the boat began to move out into the Baltic Sea headed for Sweden. It would be a rather rough trip as this was the wrong time of year for such a trip but Pavel knew he couldn’t stay in his homeland anymore.

Sweden was only the first leg on their trip. From there, they would go by plane to America, where he hoped to find a place they could survive.

Pavel took a moment to look back at the shores of his beloved Russia as the boat moved away from the docks. Behind them Russia was a sight he would never see again, and it saddened his heart. Then he turned and looked at his wife Greta and his son, Gregor.

If only Sergi Constantine hadn’t shown up... running away wouldn’t have been necessary.

      Chapter One

      Present day...

Bayou Cane, Louisiana, just outside New Orleans....

Abby George woke up that morning with a headache. Pushing off her covers, she sat up and started her day. First thing she did was pop three aspirin in her mouth and then she went out to see what her grandmother was doing.

The house she grew up in was quiet now except for the rhythmic creaking of her grandmother’s rocker while she sat by the window looking out over the harbor as the morning sun came up in the eastern sky. She always said the habit she got into was born the day they left Russia for America. She grew to love the sight of the sun on the calm water. She said the early morning when they left Russia, she’d watched the sun rise over the sea in a boat. The gentle rocking of the boat gave her at least some hope for her future but now, she just sat in her rocking chair hoping the sun rise would give her back the hope she felt all those years ago. But it wasn’t the same.

Abby always had to question her reasoning as she knew the older lady hated being here. She never knew the reasons her grandparents and father left their homeland, no one ever talked about it. Whatever caused them to leave didn’t sit well with her grandfather or her father. They had been very vocal about that over the years. Thinking back now, she realized they always laid the blame for their being in another country on just one man, Sergi. But she never knew what happened or how this man Sergi forced them from their home.

At one point, this old house had been filled with family. She remembered her grandfather as being a harsh man, and a hard man. She’d always been just a little bit afraid of him. When he spoke of having to come here he would get so enraged with an anger he had passed down to his son, her father. He also passed down his quick temper and his habit of smacking anyone who defied him.

But those days were gone now, as it was only her grandmother and her living in this house.

Growing up, Abby realized they were a dysfunctional family. Her father hadn’t been a good man, always in trouble with the law, ignoring both her and her brother after their mother died when they were young. Her father had been seeing a married woman and when her husband found them together, he shot and killed them both. Then her brother went after the guy and he was also fatally wounded by the husband. Within three months of his son and grandson’s deaths, her grandfather suffered a heart attack that took his life. That had been four years ago.

Abby wanted to move away but her grandmother’s health wasn’t very good and she had begged Abby to stay. While her grandfather and father had been fishermen, Abby had a different dream and for now, her dream was on hold. When her mother was sick and they couldn’t afford medicine she had searched for alternatives ways to deal with the pain. That’s when she found something she could believe in. Herbs and how to use them to help.

At only twelve years old she had left childhood behind and worked to find something in the books she read that would ease her mother’s pain from the cancer that was destroying her from the inside out. It was hit and miss at first, but Abby wouldn’t give up and soon she found something that helped her mother deal with the pain.

It was helping until her father found out. He destroyed the lotion she made and forbad her to make any more. She could barely stand to see her mother suffering so much, but her grandfather was watching them too carefully. Her mother died after suffering terrible agony and Abby never forgave her father or grandfather for what they had done. After that, she couldn’t wait until she was grown enough to be able to leave that miserable house.

But the next several years karma bit her family hard, now it was just her and Nonna. However, Abby knew she was stuck here until Nonna died. Now Abby went toward the place where she knew her grandmother would be.

Greta George was sitting in her rocker looking out over the water of Lake Ponchartrain as she always did. Her old eyes didn’t leave the view in front of her as Abby hustled around the kitchen making coffee and getting things out for breakfast.

“I’m not hungry this morning,” her grandmother told her.

Abby ignored her statement and made her a slice of toast anyway. When she set the plate with the toast and a cup of coffee on the table at her grandmothers side she said, “You need at least something in your belly to take your pills with.”

Greta George growled and swept both the plate and the coffee to the floor. “I said I wasn’t hungry this morning!” Her voice was hard. “You never listen to me anymore.” She flayed out her hand and connected with Abby’s cheek. “You never listen! You’re just like your mother aren’t you?”

Abby didn’t say anything she just backed away from the older lady went over to the table and drank her own coffee. She felt her grandmother’s glare but she never looked back at her as she knew Greta would start a fight like she always did. She was used the slapping and the hitting. It never even fazed Abby anymore, as it had become so routine now.

After a while, Greta turned her head back to the lake.

For a long time, neither of them said a word to each other.

Then Greta broke the silence, “I heard something the other day. A rumor that Sergi Constantine was moving here to be closer to his granddaughter and her family. My friend Gladys told me that. She called me last night to tell me he was coming here within a week’s time.”

“Who is this man?” Abby finally asked.

Greta snapped her head around and glared at her. “This man is the reason your grandfather and I had to leave Russia forty years ago. He chased us out of our home, out of the country we were born in, leaving us with nothing to begin our lives over in a foreign land.”

“Oh.” Abby s swallowed hard. Growing up in this house, she’d listened to the stories her grandfather and father told about this man Sergi. How they both hoped he would have died the night they fled their home for America.

When her grandfather found out Sergi lived, he was livid and threatened the man’s life over and over again to his own household. He made his son vow that if he ever met the man, he would kill him, then when her brother Alexis was born it became his vow as well. But now, all three of them were gone and only her grandmother was left.

“You must do what my Pavel and Gregor couldn’t. Even your own brother is gone now, so the task falls to you,” Greta told her in a solemn voice as she stared out at the water.

“I beg your pardon?” Abby whispered in shock.

Greta never turned her head. “You heard me. You have to do what your grandfather, your father and your brother couldn’t do. Our family honor now rests on your shoulders. You must kill Sergi Constantine.”

Abby pushed her chair away from the table in shock. The chair scraped against the floor with a screeching sound that made her shiver. “I will not!” She protested.

Greta turned her head and glared at the younger woman. “Yes, you will. You have to do this. Your grandfather and father both vowed a blood oath. As they are both in their graves, the task is your family honor to attend to.”

Abby shook her head. “What did he do to force you guys to leave Russia?”

“What he did doesn’t matter,” Greta insisted. Waving her hand around she snarled, “All that matters is you do what I demand. You must find a way to finish the oath your grandfather made.”

Abby looked over at the clock on the wall and declared, “I have to go to work now. We can discuss this later, but Grandmother I cannot kill a man without reason.”

“You little bitch,” Greta swore as her eyes lit with anger. “This is a blood oath and as the only remaining family member, it is up to you to see it done.”

Abby didn’t say anything. She knew when her grandmother got this way there was no talking her out of anything. Once again, she thought that maybe it was time she struck out on her own. But the training she’d had all her life to take care of her family no matter what, always kicked in. Besides, she couldn’t just leave an old woman to fend for herself, especially if she was ill.

It was family tradition though, to take care of your elders. Her grandfather demanded nothing less than total obedience to his orders and he ruled their house with an iron fist. Her grandmother put up with it and in turn, her father put up with it and when she and Alexi were born, they put up with it as well. The only time family didn’t come first was when her mother got sick.

Her grandfather declared that while she was his son’s wife, she wasn’t really family. She was an outsider brought in to produce another generation. His words were harsh and when her mother died Abby lost all respect for her grandfather and her father’ authority.
