“Or it could be fucking awful.”
Ash growled. “Don’t worry, babe. I won’t let them hurt you.”
“I’m stronger than you,” Lance said.
“Not anymore. I’m the tiger shifter now, the badass. We’ve switched roles. Didn’t you hear my impressive growl?”
“It was impressive, but it doesn’t work like that. You’ve always been a badass anyway.”
“It’s about fucking time, though.” Yuri cut in. “How many years has it been since this planet began and shifters and humans have been separate like this? That’s insane. I’m ready for a change.”
“You’re always ready for a change.”
“It’s gotta happen someday, just like I’ll find Luc eventually. It’s better to be adaptable.” Yuri tapped his fingers against the desk as a jolt of invisible energy surged through him.
“No updates on him, then,” Lance said.
“Not yet, but what he said has been bothering me. I don’t know what he’s talking about with this, ‘Find me when the time is right,’ shit, but he picked the wrong shifter to blindly take orders from him.”
“Yeah, he did.”
“I don’t answer to anyone.”
Lance growled. “No, you don’t.”
“If you ever need our help, Yuri, just say the word,” Ash said. “We’re family. Now that I know what that word means… I just want you to know you can count on me too.”
“Thanks, Ash.” Yuri grinned.
The conversation returned to simpler things after that, like talk about what the others were up to in Eurio. Mateo and Austin were finally going to have that wedding Austin had been asking for, and Yuri was supposed to fly out to Eurio to celebrate with them all. He figured he could handle that. He was happy for Mateo. For Austin too. Weddings didn’t mean much to him or Mateo, as far as he knew, but it meant a lot to Austin.
Yuri continued listening with a contentedness, knowing that everyone was, well, happy. The feeling that bigger changes were ahead rested just underneath his skin in the form of barely contained energy, but he was ready. He was a fighter, he didn’t take anything lying down, and he was alive.
