By the time I got to Violet’s room, I knew deep in my bones that something was wrong.
The room was empty, but the window was open and the curtains were blowing.
I set the tray on a table and dashed to the window, seeing no sign of her. I started hollering for my sister as Christy and Carter came to help. I looked out the window once more, but this time I saw my sister getting into someone’s car.
Carter caught my gaze, and he froze. “That’s Decker.”
I shook my head. “What? Why?”
“How?” Christy added.
Carter started to say something, but his phone rang. “I—Hello.” Carter nodded and put the phone on speaker.
“Hey, Carter.” Decker sounded far too happy. “Remember when I said Lux is thorough?”
Carter didn’t answer. We just listened.
“Well, I thought I should let you know that he’d let me in on your little secret. He infected me as a backup. Just in case something were to happen to him.”
Christy closed her eyes.
“He wanted to make sure this virus found its home in society.”
“What about my sister?” I asked.
“She just might be patient zero. I haven’t decided yet, but I’ll be in touch. Oh, and Ivy, congratulations are in order.” Decker hung up.
“I can’t believe this,” I whispered. “She’s in no condition to be up and—”
“I should have seen this coming.” Carter sat on the bed. “But it tells me one thing.”
“What’s that?” I asked, sitting next to him
He put my hand in his. “My father was right.”
“About what?”
“Only one will save us.” He pulled me into him. “And that one is you, Ivy Williams. You’re the world’s only hope.”
“I don’t know if I can.”
“You don’t have to make the choice, Ivy. Fate already chose for you and for the world.”
“I . . .” Sickness spread through me at a wicked rate.
“You’re a vampire. You’re our leader.” Carter brought my hands to his. “The prophecy was accurate, but it was about you, Ivy. You are the one who will save us.”
As I stared into Carter’s gaze, trying to make sense of everything he’d just said, I couldn’t stop wondering what the woman who’d changed Carter had said to him.
“Cater, what were her last words? The Sith who changed you.” I bit my lip and waited for his reply.
“That we’d meet again and change the world.”
