“I didn’t know him, and I soon learned that I didn’t like him either, but the hate she felt for him seemed irrational at the time. Now I know better, but then…” She shook her head. “He kept trying to spend time with me, and she came upon us more than once. Her jealousy took hold of her and she revealed her true self.”
Amelie’s eyes were lost in remembrance.
“I had heard tales about her, but never truly cared. Her eyes were the same, even after she got rid of her disguise, and I believed she was still my friend, but anger had taken hold of her. She killed him in front of me, and told me how she felt.” Amelie hesitated once more before continuing. “She didn’t even give me a chance to think about her words, her feelings, she didn’t give me a chance to say anything really and cursed me as you see, without giving me an opportunity.”
For some reason, part of Madeline suspected Amelie was angrier about that than the curse itself. Not that the changes the witch had forced on Amelie’s body made the princess comfortable.
“Then she went after my sister and cursed her as well, but this was a far more dangerous curse. She filled my older sister with darkness, anger and pain. It was a subtle thing at first, and I never really noticed it, not until I confronted the witch about it and she told me what she had done.” Amelie’s retelling came to an abrupt stop, and Madeline knew there was something else she wanted to say, but didn’t. “I thought I could stop whatever was poisoning my sister, but I was wrong. She grew in power and darkness and soon I couldn’t recognize her.”
“Did she try to hurt you?”
“No, I think that was the only line she didn’t cross.” Amelie whispered, then shook her head. “She did banish me though, and in my heart, I hope that was because she feared what she would do to me if she didn’t, but I don’t truly know.” She smiled at Madeline, but it was a sad smile. “Maybe I’m not the best person for you to be with.”
She tried to make it seem a jest, but Madeline wasn’t fooled. She poised her hands against the other woman’s cheek and caressed, and Amelie shuddered in reply, closing her eyes.
“You won’t get rid of me that easily.” The witch promised, smiling.
“It will be dangerous, and you can’t be sure you’ll be able to help my sister.” Amelie tried to argue. “I want her to go back to the woman she was more than anything, but I won’t risk you for it.”
Madeline shrugged. “It’s my risk to take, and I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t do everything I could to make you happy.”
“You…” Amelie started again, but Madeline didn’t want to hear her and pressed her palm against the other woman’s mouth, silencing the blonde.
“You’re mine, and I’m yours.” It was a promise, and though part of her found it a little strange how easily she promised such a thing to the other woman, after all they had just met, she meant it completely. “Your problems are mine as well, and I couldn’t let you face this alone. Don’t even try to ask that of me.”
When it seemed Amelie wouldn’t protest, Madeline took her hand off her mouth, leaned in and kissed the princess, slowly, tenderly, barely more than a peck on the lips. It was still enough to make both of them inhale sharply, and they tilted their heads and deepened the contact for a moment before retreating.
Amelie hesitated, wondering how she could convince the other woman, and then shook her head. In her head, she knew it was better for Madeline to stay away, safe from conflict, but her heart wanted the other woman with her, and she couldn’t resist it. She sighed, then nodded, and the smile that lit up Madeline’s face made her smile in turn, but she couldn’t help but worry nonetheless.
And yet, she couldn’t help but hope also.
Epilogue
Amelie and Madeline reached the capital, gathered the supplies they needed and left in barely no time, and they didn’t even remember the reason why they had been traveling towards it.
Amelie wasn’t completely sure about taking Madeline with her, but there would be no convincing her beloved, and in truth, she didn’t want to convince the other woman.
She wanted Madeline at her side, didn’t want to stay away from the other woman for even a moment.
It wouldn’t be easy, and she knew they would be taking risks, but Amelie believed they could cure her sister, return to her kingdom and make it whole again, and perhaps, at the end of it, she could live a happy life beside the woman at her side.
She was sure their adventures were far from over.
