“Maybe he would have killed me too,” Mac said.
“Actually, I’m surprised he didn’t.”
“What about the bomb in your office?” Colt said. “What was that all about?”
“He made me do that. He said it was important for me to have that insurance, in case the police ever figured out what was going on. He rigged the C-4 and gave me the cell phone. It was all Mr. S. I am not a bad man. You must believe me.”
“But you were the one who pushed the button,” Diana said. “That’s where your story falls apart for me. There was no way you could have known that we cleared the restaurant as we were leaving. You could have killed a lot of people.”
“So nobody was harmed?”
“Just the bomb squad’s robot. That’s the report so far, anyway. I’m sure the firefighters are still on the scene.”
Mac lowered his head and started weeping. “Looks like I’ll be spending the rest of my life behind bars,” he said.
But Colt knew that wouldn’t be the case.
Diana made a couple of phone calls, and an hour later she and Colt walked Mr. Chronis down to the boat launch and put him on a helicopter.
“I’ll be back in a little while,” Diana said.
“You’re flying with him?”
“Yeah.”
“So what’s next on the agenda?”
“Apparently, the relocation of Annex One was permanent. The Director wants us to try to find out where it is now, try to bring back the files on Reacher.”
“Us?”
“You’re still on probation. You’ll be working with me until further notice.”
“So you’re not going to kill me?”
“Not today.”
“What about Mr. S?”
“We don’t have any leads right now, but we’re always on the lookout. We’ll nail him one of these days.”
Colt nodded. “What about my wife and daughter?” he said. “When will I get to see them?”
“Not yet. Sorry.”
Diana climbed aboard, strapped herself into the seat.
Colt started back up the hill toward the house. As he passed the storage shed, he heard a big splash somewhere out in the lake. Probably not a fish, he thought. He turned around, but the helicopter was already out of sight.
