Searing and controversial romantic thriller set in Saudi Arabia Major-General Farhan Al-Balawi is a loyal soldier in the Saudi Arabian army, engaged in a struggle to defend the kingdom from drug smug-glers, conspirators and fanatical insurgents. Farhan dotes on his beloved daughter, Maryam and delights in her intelligence and independent spirit.

Despite the love she shares with her family, her respect for her father, the pride she takes in her Arabian heritage and her loyalty to Islam, Maryam yearns for travel and the opportunity to continue her education in a European university.

When Farhan announces that she is to marry – the fulfilment of a solemn promise made before she was born – Maryam endeavours to stifle her bitter disappointment. Out of love for her father, pride in her Arabian heritage and her devotion to Islam she is willing to sacrifice her yearning for travel and the opportunity to continue her education.

Then she meets Joe, an American dentist- and a Jew.

As they embark on a clandestine and passionate affair, Joe and Maryam dare to dream of freedom and of a life together. But Joe draws the attention of the Muttawa, the feared religious police, and when fate deals Maryam yet another cruel blow she knows that she faces the struggle of her life.

“... brings to life a searing and realistic portrait of an oil rich land caught between ancient codes, overwhelming wealth and the romantic desires of a beautiful Saudi woman... powerful and compelling.”
