Luisa is fought over by a motley band of low-lifes, crooks, and would-be rescuers, including the Jamaican Trevor “Terror” Penny-cooke, whom Jack knows from an earlier case. The hunt for Luisa—equal parts sordid and screwball—reaches its zenith in the Malibu Hills, where a bumbling army of suitors and rescuers touch off a gun battle and a dangerous firestorm that sweeps Jack and everyone else ahead of it screaming down the Malibu hills straight toward the Pacific ocean.
