      Note for Family Historians

The above list, which divides victims according to the areas in which they lived, is adapted from the ‘Dead and Missing’ list in Edwin Guest’s 1878 book, The Wreck of the Princess Alice.

Guest’s list includes the victims’ addresses and, in some cases, gives their employment. Although he says ‘a portion of those marked missing were identified by clothing or relics after being buried as unknown’, I found only one or two of these in the ‘List of bodies buried unknown but later identified’ at the London Metropolitan Archives (COR/PA/23-30) whilst a good number of those in his identified section do appear in this. The London Metropolitan Archives also has a long list of the names, ages, relationships and occupations of the deceased (COR/PA/1) and a list of the 130 saved (COR/PA/30).

However, Colin Alsbury, a descendent of seven victims of that name, has compiled a list of ‘Passengers, crew and others connected to the disaster’ which is available online: www.alsbury.co.uk/princessalice/alice0.htm. It includes variant and erroneous name spellings (pointing out that these can vary greatly in contemporary sources), probable places of death registration, whether the individuals were dead/missing/saved/witness/possible victims or unknown/unclaimed, but not their addresses. Newspapers, of course, are another valuable source.
