    As Time Goes By

Meanwhile, Kate Mulvaney watched her lover go through the departure gate at the airport, turned round and made for the tube station, looking very sombre. She thought he would come back to her, but she couldn’t be sure.

Back at the Kopses’ Joe Coverdale passed the basement window, crouched down, wondered at the people there, the empty bottles of champagne on the table – and three more in a plastic bucket on the floor, he noted – observed the black and white cat, much bigger, also on the table, dipping its paw in a brown jug, bringing it out wet with milk, licking off the milk and repeating the process, noticed the dingy figure of Clancy Goldstein on the step, ringing the doorbell, with a great big bunch of roses in his hand.

Joe shook his head in bafflement and moved on down the pavement, going home.
