“I’m sorry, but we have to go,” Gaspard interjected, worry coating his voice. “They’ll find us soon.”
“I’ll see you soon, love,” Joshua promised me, brushing his lips against mine again. “Stay safe for me.”
“I love you,” I sobbed out, my hands unwilling to relax their grip on him. “I love you so much. I can’t lose you,” I pleaded again, desperate for him to change his mind.
“Never,” he assured me softly. “Remember what I told you that morning on the mountain.” Soft lips brushed my head. “Damien?” My Gargoyle understood, prying my hands loose when I couldn’t relax them myself, tearing me from Joshua’s arms, and cradling me against his broad chest.
Gaspard ducked out a side entrance, followed by first Theo, then Hiro, Ryder, and Killian. Tears obscured my vision of Joshua where he stood in front of the roaring flames of the study fire as Damien carried me through the door, shutting it behind us with a final, echoing click.
They weren’t expecting your wrath. Joshua’s mental voice stroked over my mind as we ran through the hidden corridors. They won’t see our revenge either. Protect each other, whatever comes. His mental voice began to fade as we fled beyond his range. I love all of you. I sobbed my despair into Damien’s neck, feeling the icy drops as his tears joined mine. Goodbye.
