I’m pussy-whipped, as my pack brothers like to call it. And didn’t I fucking know it! But if it makes her happy, who the fuck am I to complain. As she gets to the last box, I take it from her hands and get down on one knee. Her face is a picture, and her eyes are wide as saucers. Her shaking hand moves to cover her mouth as I snap the box open.
‘Devon, you are my bonded mate, and we are sealed in this life together in every way but this.’ I clear my throat as her eyes fill with tears. ‘Devon Hathoway, will you marry me?’
She waves her hand in front of her face as she sobs. Then she throws her arms around me and almost bowls me over. She kisses me all over my face as she cries, but she still hasn’t said yes.
‘Baby, don’t keep me hanging.’ I chuckle, but I’m nervous as fuck. I still have the ring box clutched in my hand, with my arms wrapped firmly around a sobbing Devon. Jesus this was supposed to make her happy. Then she swipes at her eyes with the back of her hand and looks me dead in the eyes.
‘Yes, Jared. I will marry you. Of course, I’ll marry you!’ she squeals. And I’m fucking elated—on a high. I spin her around and kiss her with everything I’ve got. She said fucking yes!! I’m practically dancing with her in my arms when she suddenly covers her mouth with her hand—she looks green. I put her down, and she runs for the bathroom. Shit. She’s hanging over the toilet, throwing her guts up. I hold her hair back as she pukes, reaching when nothing more comes.
‘Sorry, baby. I didn’t mean to make you sick.’
She slaps my leg. ‘Don’t be stupid,’ she chastises me. She flushes, brushes her teeth, and washes her face.
‘Where is my beautiful new ring?’ she asks like a giddy kid. I slide it on her finger. It’s a Tiffany Princess something or other that Zoe helped me choose. And it fits perfectly. Thank you, Zoe. I mentally high-five her.
‘I love it, Jared. I love you.’ She strokes my face and then looks a little nervous. Probably feeling sick again. Shit.
‘You okay? You don’t look so hot?’
She swats at me, but I’m serious. ‘Baby, really. Maybe you should go back to bed?’
‘Hell no. It’s our first Christmas, and you haven’t had your present yet!’ She reaches over and into her side cupboard and pulls out a box with another stupid fucking bow on it. She pushes it into my hand, and she looks almost scared.
‘Is it gonna blow up with glitter or some shit?’ I ask, laughing as I pull the end of the bow. It falls apart, and all I need to do is take the lid off. I look over to her. She’s biting on her bottom lip, apprehensively.
‘Devon, I love it.’
She frowns at me. ‘You haven’t even opened the damn thing—you don’t know what it is yet?’
‘I know I’ll love it—that’s what matters.’
Her head tilts and she kisses me. ‘That’s so damn sweet, but for the love of God, open it please!’
I lift the lid, and my breath catches in my throat. I swallow, but I can’t get the lump to move as I pull them out by the ribbons. I look up—she’s becoming out of focus as my eyes fill with tears. I look past the little booties and into Devon’s eyes.
‘You’re gonna be a daddy,’ she confirms. And fuck me if I don’t cry like a fucking baby. I put my hand to her stomach, and I’m so happy at that moment. I can’t wait to watch her belly swell with my kid. I lay her down and lift her vest. I shower kisses all over her belly.
‘Hey, baby. This is your daddy speaking. I love you so much I can’t fuc— Ouch—’
‘No cussing around the baby!’ Devon tells me as she swipes me across the head. I have everything I wanted right here in this room. Love. Family. Happiness.
