“I hope you have left room for our baby,” Jon said, coming to stand next to her and admire the tree.
“I have. And for a lot more babies beside. Ours and your brothers’ children, and all the next generation and the one after that.” She kissed him. “We are family. And always will be.”
“This calls for champagne,” Russell said, producing a bottle, which he popped open to a cheer from everyone. As he poured it into glasses, and handed them out, Monica took a moment to look at each and every one of the people in the room. Her mom and dad, and Ethan. Jon and his family, plus their wives, children, and the two old men, Jeremy and Marvin, who had become friends and fishing buddies.
“Happy?” Jon asked.
“Incredibly,” Monica said. “I can’t wait to open to the public on Saturday.”
“Neither can I. I hear most of Bear Bluff is coming to see the exhibits.”
“I’m so pleased, everyone has been incredibly generous with their time and donations.”
“Because they know we are all connected too.” Jon looked up at the tree. “If we looked down into the roots of your tree, we would all interconnect at some point.”
“That’s a profound statement.”
“Coming from a bear,” he added.
“Coming from my bear,” she said and kissed him, while all around them the sounds of a celebration grew louder.
The museum was built to house history, but Monica knew they were making their own history. Today and every day from now on. And she intended to make it the best she possibly could, with the people she loved.
