True North: A Wordsmith Chronicles MC Standalone

    Prev Next

I grin at her words. I’ve never had anyone say it to me quite like that. But I’ve never known a woman like Delilah in my life. That’s why she’s my wife, and that’s why she’s going to be the mother of my children. “You’re pretty smart, you know that?”

      “I have my moments.”

I grab onto her and pull her close to me. Her body falls against mine, and we both lean back on the couch. “So that’s only one question left, then.”

“What to name her. Or him.”

“Okay, fine, there are only two questions left.”

      “What’s the other one?”

“What the hell is my next book going to be about?”

“Holy shit,” she laughs. “I just told you that you’re going to be a father for the first time and you’re thinking about your next book?”

“If you didn’t realize by now, baby, I’m always thinking about what my next book is going to be about. Just the way I operate.”

“I know,” she says, putting her head back down on my chest. “It’s why they love you so much. It’s why they can’t wait until your next new release.”

      “I’m stuck on ideas.”

“You’ve been a little busy, with getting kidnapped and the two of us almost dying and stuff.”

      “That’s no excuse.”

We both crack up. I haven’t laughed like this—straight from the belly—in some time, and the tightness it brings to my stomach is another of many great feelings I’m having tonight. We lie for a minute, just enjoying the feel of one another, and then Delilah does what she always does—bring order to the chaos of my brain.

“I have an idea,” she says. “It’s probably stupid, though.”

“It’s never stupid,” I tell her. “Go on. You know I always listen to you.”

“I know you do, even when the ideas are stupid. But I’ll let you be the judge, you’re the writer. This whole thing with Travis had me reflecting on our past.”

      “What about it?” I ask.

“Everything. After you left the MC, but before you were the bestselling writer that you are now. Remember all the crazy shit that we went through. Remember the time that. . .”

I cut her off by sitting straight up in the air. Her words inspire me so much that I can’t sit still. It was so obvious—staring me right in the face, yet I couldn’t see it. My next story is our story. I put my hands down to catch my pregnant wife from almost falling off the couch when I jump up, but then I stand and head for my writing room.

      “Where are you going?”

“The writing cave. Have to get some words down.”

      “Now?” she asks.

“Right now. I’ll be back. You said exactly what I needed to hear, and that means that words have to come out of me. I do remember that time. I remember all the times, and I think everyone else would love to know also. If that’s okay with you?”

“It’s fine with me. I have nothing to hide.”

“Make sure you mean that. Because if I tell this story then I’m really going to tell it right. The way it happened. All the drama and excitement with no punches pulled. Are you okay having our past in paperback form for thousands to read?”

She thinks for a second, and then looks me in the eye. “Make it tens of thousands and I’m good.”

“I will,” I tell her. “I sure will.”

“Then get going. Don’t worry, I’ll still be here when you get back.”

“Alright. Thank you.” I turn around and take two steps towards my writing cave—the name for the spare room I use to create all of my novels—and then I stop dead in my tracks and turn back around. “Delilah?”

      “Yeah, James, what is it?”

“This is the happiest I’ve ever been in my entire life. Actually, why don’t you come and help me after all?”

“Help you write?” she asks. “I’m not a writer, babe.”

“I didn’t ask you to help me write the book. I can do that on my own.”

“Then what?” I shoot her the look. She knows what it means. “Oh.”

      “More inspiration than help.”

“I see. I think I can help you with that.”

She starts to walk past me, towards our bedroom, but I stop her dead in her tracks. “No,” I say, grabbing her by the arm. “Not there. Here. Right here.”

      “The writing cave?” she asks.

“Later it will be. When I write my masterpiece. But right now, it isn’t the writing cave, it’s the about to fuck my woman silly cave. Have you ever been?” She shakes her head. “Well then, let me show you around.”

      Forty Nine

“. . .love fucking your wife.”

That was just what I needed. Ask a hundred people what makes a great marriage and you’ll get a hundred different answers, most of them stupid. There’s love, there’s honesty, there’s good communication. That’s all true. But the thing that no one likes to say in proper company? You should love fucking your wife as much now as you did the first time you fucked her. Every time I’m with Delilah is like that—like that first time, and tonight was no exception.

But now that she’s asleep and I’m inspired, I walk in my boxers back to the writing cave. I open up my laptop and let my fingers do their work.

      BT Urruela

BT Urruela is a combat wounded amputee, purple heart recipient, contemporary author who has written both independent and traditionally published books. He is a RARE under 40 award recipient, Rockwood Summit High School and Rockwood School District Hall of Fame inductee, Co-founder and Brand Ambassador for VETSports, Ambassador for Tampa Sports Academy, People Magazine Tribute for Heroes winner, Cover Model, Motivational Speaker and Philanthropist.

Upon graduation from high school his desire to have a 20-year military career was cut drastically short by an improvised explosive device. Taking the life of his commander, and leaving the remaining four team members badly wounded. His focus on restoring his physical shape being the most eminent battle caused him to negle
ct his psychological state. Meeting people was difficult and there were very few options for veterans to utilize that would stimulate friendship, and ultimately, allow communication barriers to be breached. After moving to Tampa, Florida, he co-founded the veteran community sports nonprofit, VETSports, with two other combat wounded veterans. It was their mission to change the way veterans transitioned back to civilian life through organized team sports, community involvement, and leadership opportunities.

After being invited to attend a photoshoot with acclaimed photographer Michael Stokes, he flew to California in December of 2014, with incredible excitement. His photos were so widely publicized that he soon gained exposure to the literary world like he'd always dreamed of. That opportunity launched him into his present writing career. He co-wrote the novel 'A Lover's Lament with author KL Grayson. The following year he released first solo novel, 'Into the Nothing' and will be releasing Wicked Little Words with author Stevie J. Cole. He is now writing full-time.

      Scott Hildreth

Scott Hildreth was born into this world early and plans on leaving late. He has published more than forty novels (both traditionally and independently) and has every intention of writing many more. Despite falling in love with his wife, Jessica, late in life, Scott professes to be an authority on the subject of love, and his writing is a reflection of this belief. His preferred careers of being a biker, military hero, mafia boss, boxer, vigilante, and tattoo artist will always be favorites, but as writing has become a full-time gig, he must live vicariously through the characters in his books who share his admiration for these professions.
