Sir William Keith stepped ashore at Berwick followed by Sir Ian Logan, knighted by King Alfonso with two more nineteen year old squires in honour of the part played by the Scottish knights in the victory at Teba. Simon and Edgar had been buried in Castile with the other knights who fell in the battle but William had brought the bones of the Good Sir James back to be laid to rest at St. Brides Kirk in his beloved Douglasdale. He gave the Bruce’s heart, still in its now somewhat battered silver casket, to the Regent, Thomas Randolph, who interred it under the high altar of Melrose Abbey.
Once William had left Randolph, he set off with Sir Ian Logan and his son Martin, now Ian’s squire, and headed for Lamberton and Ayton. Of all the sombre duties he had to carry out, telling Bridget and Catriona that their husbands were dead was the one he was dreading the most.

About the Author
H A Culley served in the Army for twenty four years during which time he had a variety of unusual jobs. These included commanding an Arab unit in the desert for three years and a tour as the military attaché in Beirut in the late seventies.
After leaving the Army he became the business manager of a large independent school for twenty years before moving into marketing and fundraising. He has also been involved in two major historical projects and worked for an educational charity until recently. He is now retired but is still involved in the voluntary sector.
He has three adult children and lives near Holy Island in Northumberland with his wife and two Bernese Mountain Dogs.
