"Anne?"
Anne Barclay started when someone touched her shoulder. Blinking away the fog that had been building up in her mind, she looked up at the woman standing beside her, giving her a frown that bordered on disapproving.
"Anne, the service is over. Everyone's gone."
Anne was last in the pew. She blushed.
"Sorry, Mother." She stood up and smoothed her hands down her dress. "I guess I was thinking about something else."
Fortunately, she was in a back row where people wouldn’t notice her unusual behavior. Sitting where they were, near the wall, Anne hoped no one had noticed.
Mary Barclay was still frowning at her.
"What is wrong with you, Anne? You weren't paying attention at all."
"I didn't sleep well last night." Anne shrugged, hoping that would be enough justification. "It was too hot."
"I know it was hot, but that doesn't excuse your lack of attention."
Anne flushed. Her mother was a very spiritual person and took the Bible and God reverently. She expected her husband and only daughter to be just as serious about their faith. Her husband tolerated her, but Anne could feel herself slipping. She didn't want to know anything more about God. Her mother would have a fit if she disclosed how she truly felt.
So she bit her lip and bowed her head.
"Sorry, Mother." She murmured.
