James wasn’t angry. He was sad, but in the aftermath, he and his friends found direction. Alongside his mother, Carrie, Kevin, Eric, and even Hank, he made it to church back home in Caleb every single Sunday. He still couldn’t recite a verse, still couldn’t give you any official prayer; his faith was more spiritual. Being in God’s house every week was all the replenishing he needed. Kevin often joked that they were God’s Goon Squad. It wasn’t far off. James felt certain that should anything wicked ever rise again, he and his friends would meet, battle, and conquer whatever it was. They had marched through hell, taken their wounds, faced devils eye-to-eye, and lived to tell the story.

At the end of the day, James considered that ability to endure, to overcome, and to carry on, to be the greatest of gifts bestowed upon them.

James slung his bag over his shoulder, closed his bedroom door, and smiled. He was ready to rejoin his squad for the weekend and carry on.
