      “A long while,” Sam said.

“Use it for good—or go crazy and blow it. Consider it your fee—a gift of thanks—for finding out what happened to Phoebe.”

I shook my head. “I barely did. I really can’t!”

“You have to! Giving it to you makes me feel like Queen Isabella, sending you off on your great adventure. Find the new world, you two. Go!”

And so we did. The auction is next month and the painting is being treated as if it were royalty. As if, in fact, it were a king’s treasure, which, apparently, it was.

      Phoebe would be so proud.

“Happy New Year,” Mackenzie said again.

It was a pretty sure thing.
