      “How are you?”

He snorted. “Winston’s pissed. He’s angry we made him look bad, so he’s blaming us for this mess. Apparently, we should have shared this intel with him, Voletek, and Lisco before they ran off with the strike team.”

“We didn’t know anything for sure. And something tells me he wouldn’t have listened anyway.”

“That’s not really the point.” Brad popped the top and took a sip. “Is Emma still mad at me?”

      “Emma’s always mad at you.”

“To be honest, I’m enjoying the silent treatment.”

“You know, since Tarelli’s dead, you don’t have to spend all your off hours hanging around here.”

“Are you kicking me out? I came to the rescue, DeMarco. You should be grateful.”

“I am.” I reached for a slice of pizza, my gaze stopping on the bottle of cognac. “You want to crack that open?”

“I thought you weren’t willing to accept bribes, especially from Axel Kincaid.”

“I’m not. I also can’t drink with my pills. But you are obviously in need of some libations.” I pointed to the bottle in his hand. “And I don’t have anything else in the house to offer you.”

Brad drained the cider, unwilling to let it go to waste, and reached for the cognac. “That’s the first time Kincaid hasn’t come through with something for you. I guess that means this isn’t a bribe. It’s just a get well gift.”

“Or he didn’t have any intel on Tarelli, which makes sense. Tarelli didn’t have much of a plan when he got out of prison aside from getting revenge on everybody in uniform and stealing as much money as possible. Everything just fell into place when he happened to overhear Carter Moore talking to the dispensary owner. And since Tarelli had a limited crew, Kincaid never heard a thing. Axel may be connected, but he’s not a mind reader.”

“I still don’t get how Tarelli knew about the evidence transport. He had it timed perfectly, and he managed to get into the precinct and down to the parking garage without issue.”

“Another problem for another day,” I said.

Brad pointed at the box of chocolates. “Which means you shouldn’t let those go to waste either.”

“Maybe we’ll have them for dessert.”

“Oh, I get to stay for dessert?” His lip quirked up on the side. “I thought you were kicking me out.”

“I’m not kicking you out. I just don’t want what happened to me to keep you from having a life outside of work. Outside of us.”

He put the bottle of cognac down. “What if this is what I want? You and me. This. What’s wrong with that?”

“There’s nothing wrong with it. But you deserve more.”

“So do you, but I don’t see you jumping at any of the offers coming your way.”

I shrugged. “I’m good with this for now.”

      “Me too.”

One serial killer plus a rogue cop equals a recipe for disaster…

Following recent events, Detective Liv DeMarco finds herself working undercover. But this time, her partner, Brad Fennel, isn’t backing her plays. He’s been reassigned. Whether that’s temporary or permanent is anyone’s guess, but Liv doesn’t like it. There’s no one she trusts more than Brad, and she needs him to watch her back as she hunts a serial killer who’s murdering escorts.

In the midst of the operation, she spots Brad entering an adjacent hotel room. But as far as she knows, he’s not working this case, and his disheveled appearance and glassy eyes have her worried. She’s seen Brad in compromising positions before, but never like this. Has he gone rogue? Or has he just given up?

While Liv hunts a killer, she’ll unravel a world of secrets and deceit, where no one is who they say they are. How does her partner, the man she trusts most, fit into this mess? And will they be able to get out of it alive and unscathed? Or is this the end of their perfect partnership?
