“All for you,” he said in a low voice, almost a growl.
He carried her through the darkness to the little cottage, and when he laid her down on the too-small bed, there was nowhere else in the world—in the universe—she wanted to be than Sunset Falls, Montana, United States, Earth, in the arms of the alien who loved her.

When they got back to Evens’ Odds & Ends Shop early the next morning, Sol was waiting. He cast one wryly amused eye over them. “So you’re mated?”
Though Tyler’s heart ached at the joy and jealousy in his voice, she glanced up at Cross to answer.
He slung his arm low around her waist, pulling her closer even as he shook his head. “Not exactly, no. The wyvryn is hungry to bite, but it will wait until I can tell her everything about our beast battalion.”
Sol looked away, hiding the haunting shadows in his eyes. “My fault. If not for me—”
“No,” Cross said with steadfast calm. “When we left Xymir, I told you we’d take this job so that we would all find mates, and I wouldn’t rest until you and Zenith were bonded.” His grip around Tyler tightened. “That hasn’t changed even if I unchained my beast.”
After a tense moment, Sol snorted. “Yeah. I don’t think you were resting last night.”
Tyler snickered too when Cross’s cheeks turned red. Who would’ve thought a wyvryn would blush? “Now that I know why you need a matchmating, I can add a subroutine especially for species that favor such a profound, lasting connection.”
Sol blinked. “Are Earthers like that?”
She bit back a smile. “Some of us, yeah, with the right beast.” She peered up sidelong at Cross.
His answering smile was as sweet as chocolate syrup before he cleared his throat and asked Sol, “Anything from Evens? I told the workers and staff at the outpost to look around and keep watch, but they never saw him at the supposed meeting.”
“Nothing.” Sol let out a thwarted huff. “Impossible to tell if this is him being his usual unpredictable, unreliable self or something worse.”
“There’s a lot of work to do before the relaunch of the Big Sky outpost,” Tyler said. “You’ll find him by then. I admit I wasn’t sure about this job before, and then I was feeling a little freaked out about the whole aliens-among-us thing—”
“A little?” Cross muttered. “You fell off a cliff to get away from me.”
She hip-checked him. “—And before I came to Sunset Falls, I would’ve sworn that love didn’t matter to me. But I was lying to myself. Whatever comes next, we can figure this out. Together.”
Cross’s eyes glinted with fire as he leaned down to kiss her. When he straightened, Sol was gone, but she was filled with a hot resolve. The universe was vast, maybe infinite, but for those who wanted it—and with a little touch of matchmating—love could span the void between the stars.
