I won’t allow myself. I’m better off alone.
“I’m not free.”
“Yes, you are.” Zeke grabs my hand, and it burns. I jerk my hand free.
He steps back sadly.
“I’m not free, Zeke. Saving Hugo wasn’t the only vow I made. My ten years might be over, but I’ve saved others. I owe more debts.”
Zeke frowns. “None of those men matter.”
I shake my head. “Every life matters. Good, evil. Strong, weak. I want to save everyone. Just like I wish someone would have saved me before I became this dark version of myself.”
“What are you saying, Siren?”
“I’m saying that I’ll never be free of Julian, but I can be free of you. You are the one man I will never save. I used to love you. I would have done anything for you. But you proved to me that all men are evil. That all men hurt women. That you are just as vile.”
I did it. I told my first lie out loud to another person. Because everything out of my mouth is lies. And everything I’m feeling is lies too. I don’t feel pain when Zeke touches me. I feel nothing but love.
Bishop didn’t take my love away from me. He showed me Zeke’s fate if I let him fall in love with me—death. Every man who loves a siren dies, whether the siren wants them to or not.
I love Zeke. I’ll always love Zeke. Zeke protected those women with everything he had. He didn’t sell them. Someone else did. Someone he loved betrayed him.
He’ll figure that out soon enough. But for now, this will give us distance. He can think I hate him. That I can’t touch him. That I don’t love him. It’s the only way to protect him.
The fight I see in Zeke’s eyes scares me. I’m afraid this time, it’s too late. That he can see through my lies. That this time, he’s fallen in love with me. And that love will destroy him.
Run, Zeke. Run back to your friends. Only they can protect you from me.
And then I do the one thing that I know will push Zeke away from me. Hopefully, for good.
I pull out a piece of paper with Lucy’s new address.
“Lucy needs you.”
The lies spill effortlessly from my lips now. Apparently, lying for love is easy.
Zeke stares at the address before ripping it up. And then he pushes past me.
“I’ll be back,” he says, grabbing the keys to his truck before he leaves.
No, you won’t.
So this is what real heartbreak feels like…
