“Sweet talker,” she said as she propped her elbow on the counter and rested her chin on her hand.
He turned back to the machine and finished his task. Once it was done, he took a deep breath and steeled himself. This was it. The moment he’d been planning for weeks—the one he’d obsessed over before finally deciding this was the most them way to do this. He just hoped it went how he’d pictured it. He carried the drink over to her, his shaking hands making him afraid he was going to drop the damn thing. “I’ve been working on a new design. I wanted to ask you what you thought.” He set the cup down in front of her and held his breath.
Blake looked down at the drink in front of her, and then her eyes widened and darted to his. “Gavin, holy shit.”
He would’ve sworn he could feel every pulse point in his body. She looked shocked, but was it a good shocked or a bad shocked? “What do you think?”
“I think Stu is going to fire you if you start drawing cock rings on his lattes.”
Gavin’s brain shorted out. “Wait…what?”
“I’m not saying it’s not impressive or anything. But, and I’m not sure I’ve ever said this to someone else, it’s not really appropriate.”
Gavin rubbed his face with his hands. “It’s not a cock ring,” he said, whispering the final two words.
“Oh.” She looked at the latte again and then back at him. “I’m confused.”
Gavin gestured for her to move away from the counter before he put his hands on it and catapulted himself over to her side.
“That was super hot. You should do that when we go home later,” Blake remarked.
“You’re not allowed to talk anymore for a second,” he said, his tone teasing.
“That’s even hotter,” she whispered.
Gavin laughed. “You’re ridiculous.” He grabbed the drink he’d made her in one hand and took her hand with his other. “This is a grande quad nonfat one-pump no-whip mocha latte.”
Blake’s face screwed up at the mention of her drink nemesis.
“And the design is not a cock ring. It’s an engagement ring.”
It took Blake a minute to register his words, but he could tell when she did. Her eyes widened again and filled with tears. “The cock ring made more sense,” she said, her voice almost a whimper.
He noticed the café had gone quiet, and he felt eyes on them, but he let all of that fall away. He leaned in close to her. “No, it doesn’t,” he said against her lips before kissing her. Then he put the cup down and dropped to one knee. He reached into his apron pocket and withdrew a small box. He struggled to open the lid with one hand but finally managed. He held it out so she could see it.
She gripped his other hand tightly as she gazed at the ring in his hand. “You want to marry me?” she said, and she sounded so vulnerable in that moment that Gavin swore he’d spend the rest of his life protecting and cherishing her.
“Shouldn’t I be the one asking that question?” he said with a smirk before he grew more serious. “Of course. There is no one else in this world like you. Which means there’s no one else in this world for me. You’re my best friend and my soulmate. Not to mention we’re already roommates,” he teased. “It just makes good sense for us to get married.”
She smiled at that, a single tear making a track down her cheek.
“What do you say?” he asked.
“I say yes. For you, the answer will always be yes.”
And as Gavin slipped the ring on her finger and then stood and swept her up into his arms, he knew the answer would always be yes for her too.
