      Hebouncescheerfullyupanddown;

      herushesincirclesinthefallenleaves.

      OfcourseImayberememberingitallwrong

      after,after—howmanyyears?

      ThatgoldeneveningIreallywantedtogonofarther;

      morethananythingelseIwantedtostayawhile

      inthatconfluxoftwogreatrivers,Tapajós,Amazon,

      grandly,silentlyflowing,flowingeast.

      Suddenlythere’dbeenhouses,people,andlotsofmongrel

      riverboatsskitteringbackandforth

      underaskyofgorgeous,under-litclouds,

      witheverythinggilded,burnishedalongoneside,

      andeverythingbright,cheerful,casual—orsoitlooked.

      Ilikedtheplace;Ilikedtheideaoftheplace.

      Tworivers.Hadn’ttworiverssprung

      fromtheGardenofEden?No,thatwasfour

      andthey’ddiverged.Hereonlytwo

      andcomingtogether.Evenifoneweretempted

      toliteraryinterpretations

      suchas:life/death,right/wrong,male/female

      —suchnotionswouldhaveresolved,dissolved,straightoff

      inthatwatery,dazzlingdialectic.

      Infrontofthechurch,theCathedral,rather,

      therewasamodestpromenadeandabelvedere

      abouttofallintotheriver,

      stubbypalms,flamboyantslikepansofembers,

      buildingsonestoryhigh,stucco,blueoryellow,

      andonehousefacedwith azulejos, buttercupyellow.

      Thestreetwasdeepindark-goldriversand

      dampfromtheritualafternoonrain,

      andteamsofzebusplodded,gentle,proud,

      and blue, withdown-curvedhornsandhangingears,

      pullingcartswithsolidwheels.

      Thezebus’hooves,thepeople’sfeet

      wadedingoldensand,

      damperedbygoldensand,

      sothatalmosttheonlysounds

      werecreaksand shush,shush,shush.

      Tworiversfullofcrazyshipping—people

      allapparentlychangingtheirminds,embarking,

      disembarking,rowingclumsydories.

      (AftertheCivilWarsomeSouthernfamilies

      camehere;heretheycouldstillownslaves.

      Theyleftoccasionalblueeyes,Englishnames,

      and oars. Nootherplace,noone

      onalltheAmazon’sfourthousandmiles

      doesanythingbutpaddle.)

      Adozenorsoyoungnuns,white-habited,

      wavedgailyfromanoldstern-wheeler

      gettingupsteam,alreadyhungwithhammocks

      —offtotheirmission,daysanddaysaway

      upGodknowswhatlosttributary.

      Side-wheelers,countlesswobblingdugouts…

      Acowstoodupinone,quitecalm,

      chewinghercudwhilebeingferried,

      tipping,wobbling,somewhere,tobemarried.

      Ariverschoonerwithrakedmasts

      andviolet-coloredsailstackedinsoclose

      herbowspritseemedtotouchthechurch

      (Cathedral,rather!).Aweekorsobefore

      there’dbeenathunderstormandtheCathedral’d

      beenstruckbylightning.Onetowerhad

      awideningzigzagcrackallthewaydown.

      Itwasamiracle.Thepriest’shouserightnextdoor

      hadbeenstruck,too,andhisbrassbed

      (theonlyoneintown)galvanizedblack.

      Graçasadeus—he’dbeeninBelém.

      Inthebluepharmacythepharmacist

      hadhunganemptywasps’nestfromashelf:

      small,exquisite,cleanmattewhite,

      andhardasstucco.Iadmiredit

      somuchhegaveittome.

      evenifIliketopretendtheyhave

      alittlenorth,alittlesouthorsidewise,

      andthatthey’refreewithinthebluefrontiersofbay.

      Thismonth,ourfavoriteoneisfullofflowers:

      Buttercups,RedClover,PurpleVetch,

      Hawkweedstillburning,Daisiespied,Eyebright,

      theFragrantBedstraw’sincandescentstars,

      andmore,returned,topaintthemeadowswithdelight.

      TheGoldfinchesareback,orotherslikethem,

      andtheWhite-throatedSparrow’sfive-notesong,

      pleadingandpleading,bringstearstotheeyes.

      Naturerepeatsherself,oralmostdoes:

      repeat,repeat,repeat;revise,revise,revise.

      Yearsago,youtoldmeitwashere

      (in1932?)youfirst“discovered girls”

      andlearnedtosail,andlearnedtokiss.

      Youhad“suchfun,”yousaid,thatclassicsummer.

      (“Fun”—italwaysseemedtoleaveyouataloss…)

      YouleftNorthHaven,anchoredinitsrock,

      afloatinmysticblue…Andnow—you’veleft

      forgood.Youcan’tderange,orre-arrange,
