I sat up and looked at the moon, shining above the pit. I held each member of my pack in my mind: Ázzuen, Marra, TaLi, MikLan and BreLan. Tlitoo, Jlela, and Nlitsa. I thought of how NiaLi and Trevegg had died to protect the promise, how TaLi had come for me. I thought of how we were pack. I thought of the task we had taken on, and what it meant for wolf and humankind. Sitting up in the dank pit I looked up at the moon that I knew every member of my pack could see, and I howled to them.
I, for one, would keep the promise I had made.

Promise of the Wolves
First in a spellbinding trilogy: 14,000 years ago, a young wolf makes a discovery which will change the world...
Born of a forbidden, mixed-blood litter and an outcast after her mother is exiled, spirited young she-wolf Kaala is grudgingly permitted to join the Swift River wolf pack where she must fight to prove herself and survive against the odds. But when Kaala rescues a human child from drowning, she breaks the first and oldest tenet of the promise of the wolves — never consort with humans — and sets in train a series of events that threatens the very survival of her species. As war looms between wolf and humankind, Kaala discovers the truth behind the promise of the wolves: a discovery which could lead to her death and the destruction of all she holds dear.
