He tore into it, and lifted the picture of the two of them at the Eiffel Tower, in the Eiffel tower frame. A reminder of their first date. She’d taped the keychain, also in the shape of the Eiffel tower to one edge.
“Lena … I love it so much.”
She smiled at him shyly. “Happy birthday, William.”
She glanced at the banner hanging in the middle of the mall. “Happy 700th birthday, William,” she chuckled.
His expression froze and he rubbed the back of his neck.
“What is it?” she asked. “You’re not really 700 years old, right?”
“Well, lass, the thing of it is…”
Her mouth dropped open. “You are 700 years old?” She practically whispered the words.
His breath left him in a rush and he looked anxious, and uncomfortable. His brow rose.
“Surprise?”
