Does Admiralty and HM Govt. allow this to continue, the enterprise needs a new Approach. Now that it has suffered such Grievous Losses, and is in need of Replacements and Re-enforcement, it may be time for wiser Heads to prevail and declare it too Costly, and bring it to an End.
I will own that being reduced from command of Coromandel to 4th Ofcr. into Vigilance has given me some new Adventures, and a wee modicum of Renown, more so than command of an un-armed trooper, the Results of the Squadron’s activities so far have been Niggling; a bridge brought down, road convoys burned and beasts slaughtered, some guns ashore silenced, and some casualties among the French garrisons along the Calabrian coast, all easily replaceable from the Emperor Napoleon’s vast Reserves. I fear that Capt. Sir Alan Lewrie, Bt., settles too easily for Pence and Shillings, when he could be going after Guineas.
Do please relay my best Respects to those Gentlemen to whom I owe so much Favour and Advancement, in hopes that my humble Conclusions anent our Doings here in the Ionian Sea will be Useful to them.
Aye, Lewrie had taken him aboard with no seeing recriminations and had allowed him to see real action … had allowed him to learn how to kill with glee … but Dickson could not find it in his heart to ever forgive him the gross insult of taking his ship away from him and shaming him in the eyes of his former crew.
Sooner or later, this Lewrie would pay.
