Shortly after I signed my first book contract at Harper & Row, my editor, Rick Kot, took me to meet Barbara Rittenhouse and Mark Landau in the Special Marketing department. Although it was a friendly visit at first, the three of them proceeded to tie me to an easy chair with some spare hemp that was lying around Barbara’s office. At first I feared violence, but soon I found out that the purpose of the abduction was to elucidate the Master Plan the three of them had charted for me.
