“That, and a whole lot more.”
Daniel shook his head sadly. “Was it worth it?”
Suddenly the lights flickered.
Then they went out.
Emergency red lights turned on in the room.
Daniel glanced out in the hallway. His father, Mira, the CEO, and the guards were all reacting in panic.
Daniel looked at Eric, but his friend seemed just as surprised as him.
Although there was something on Eric’s face that wasn’t on the other people’s:
Hope.
A familiar, deep voice rumbled over the speakers in the room.
“CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER SHINZO AKIYAMA… RELEASE MY APPRENTICE NOW, OR I WILL BEGIN DESTROYING YOUR COMPANY PIECE BY PIECE, MINUTE BY MINUTE. IT IS YOUR DECISION WHETHER YOU LOSE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS… OR LET HIM GO.”
The CEO’s face twisted with horror in the blood-red light.
Daniel looked back at his best friend across the table.
“Was it worth it?” Eric repeated with a grin. “Ask me that again in about five minutes.”
