I open the envelope.
Skylar’s list:
Never stop singing.
Don’t be afraid of falling in love again.
I drop to the floor and start crying. When I finally manage to get myself together, I get up and go to the hospital. He is awake and talking to Kyle when I walk in.
“Kyle, can you leave us alone, please?” I ask.
He nods. I can tell he has been crying too. He whispers something in Alec’s ear and leaves.
I approach Alec slowly, still holding on to his list.
“Your list isn’t finished,” I say in a low tone.
He looks away and now he is the one crying.
I look down at his hand and trace the semicolon tattoo on the side of his finger. “Our story isn’t over, Alec Matthew,” I say. “Alec, you have to fight this,” I beg.
He doesn’t say anything at first, and I know how he always felt about it.
“You have to fight this, Alec.”
He sits up and I sit next to him.
“Sky, I—”
I interrupt him. “Alec, you wouldn’t be doing this just for us anymore. You have to fight it.”
He gives me a confused look.
“Alec, you have to be here to finish your list.”
And then it finally hits him.
“No,” he says in between tears. “When did you find out?”
“This morning. I was going to tell you tonight after the game.”
He pulls me into a hug. This only makes him cry even more.
“Please don’t give up on us,” I beg him. “I need you here. He, or she, will need you here.”
“Okay,” he says.
FIVE YEARS LATER
I sit by the pool added to the farm right after the move in date and play my guitar. Amanda and uncle J’s little girls sit next to me and start singing when I hear Kyle yell from the door. “Where is everyone?”
“Out back!” Sebastian yells. Sebastian grins from ear to ear at the sound of Kyle’s name.
Kyle steps out on the back porch and winks at Sebastian. He then looks around. “Where is he?”
I laugh. “You know where he is.”
Kyle takes a few steps back, looks over to the side and laughs. “Alec Grayson. Get your little butt over here.”
“Uncle Kyle!” my little boy comes running, carrying his dad’s baseball bat. His chocolate brown eyes full of excitement.
“Hey kid. Are you ready to do this?”
He nods in excitement.
“Okay, then,” says Kyle. “Tell your dad to get out here.”
He takes off running and minutes later, Alec comes out, with Grayson on top of his shoulders and laughing. Alec’s eyes meet mine as soon as he steps outside. He puts Grayson down and gives me a kiss right before they walk to the side of the house to work on what used to be the last item on his list. The list if far from over now, and it’s finally full of things that are not just for me, or Grayson, but for Alec too.
