Blunted unto goodness is the heart which anger never stirreth,
But that which hatred swelleth, is keen to carve out evil.
Anger is a noble infirmity, the generous failing of the just.
The one degree that riseth above zeal, asserting the prerogatives of virtue:
But hatred is a slow continuing crime, a fire in the bad man's breast,
A dull and hungry flame, for ever craving insatiate.
Hatred would harm another; anger would indulge itself;
Hatred is a simmering poison; anger, the opening of a valve:
Hatred destroyeth as the upas-tree; anger smiteth as a staff:
Hatred is the atmosphere of hell; but anger is known in heaven.
Is there not a righteous wrath, an anger just and holy,
When goodness is sitting in the dust, and wickedness enthroned on Babel?
Doth pity condemn guilt? is justice not a feeling but a law
Appealing to the line and to the plummet, incognizant of moral sense?
Thou that condemnest anger, small is thy sympathy with angels.
Thou that hast accounted it for sin, cold is thy communion with heaven.

l those feelings of anger, animosity and resentment that burn inside you, building up into a raging, all-encompassing fire until you can no longer control yourself.
And then, when rational thought is lost like, as Yeats described, a besom that clears the soul of everything that is not mind or sense, what depths of depravity would you sink to in order to manifest all that hate?
Freud said hate was an ego state that wishes to destroy the source of unhappiness so that to fulfil self-preservation, and boy, did these one hundred and fifty authors leave behind some destruction!

She throws a bucket of ice-water on the bound and gagged woman, prone on the floor. Her captive startles into consciousness, writhing pitifully, eyes wide. She smiles as the woman recognises her face, terror taking over.
“You thought you’d get away with it, didn’t you?” she asks.
The woman tries to speak, but it’s an exercise in futility.
“You thought there’d be no consequence? Your lies got my husband thrown in prison—an innocent man!”
Sobs. Tears.
“Your crocodile tears won’t work on me, sweetheart,” she says, brandishing a blowtorch. “You had your fun, now it’s my turn to play.”
ZOEY XOLTON is an Australian Speculative Fiction writer, primarily of Dark Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. She is also a proud mother of two and is married to her soul mate. Outside of her family, writing is her greatest passion. She is especially fond of short fiction and is working on releasing her own themed collections in future.

“They say love and hate are just two sides of the same coin,” said Brent. He reached into his pocket and removed a quarter. He held it up so his wife could see it. “Heads, I used to love you so much I married you. Tails, I can’t stand the sight of you now.”
“The feeling is mutual,” his wife assured him, throwing clothing into a suitcase.
Brent flipped the quarter and snatched it out of the air with one hand.
“What are you doing?” his wife asked.
“Heads, I let you go. Tails, you never leave this room alive.”
