presented: another drink, or a celebration of Cecily’s and Buddy’s lives.
May 5 - 7
In the final days of his residency, WF could mention Buddy by name in every group
therapy session. With some support, he was able to explain to others the circumstances
in which Buddy died. While he never publicly acknowledged his responsibility for letting

Buddy drive off with Bethany while she was intoxicated, he did accept this fact in one of
our last private therapy sessions.
May 8
The day before his discharge he met separately with SS and then JB and (according to
each of them, as they reported it to me later) he thanked them for “opening the door” to
him. In our final exit interview, I revealed these comments to him. He appeared to be
genuinely grateful to them and he thanked me as well.
May 9
WF discharged under his own care.
May 17
Discharge follow-up
One week following his discharge I phoned the editor at the San Francisco Post, Wally
Gimbel, who informed me that WF was covering a story in Oregon. According to the
editor, WF had been filing stories daily and on deadline. The quality of his work was
“superior” and he felt optimistic about WF’s recovery. I await word on his progress
following his return.
