“I know. I knew it when I saw the scarf in your case.” He stroked her cheek once more and her chin. He touched her lips with his finger, his eyes on them. “We were already there, days ago. We had to go through all the…the off-loading. I couldn’t see past my work and loyalties. They had to shift, first.” He touched his head to hers. “I love you, with a power which should frighten me, only I know from before how good it can be.”
“Then Yana’s loss is not wasted,” she breathed.
Mischa kissed her. “Not anymore.” Then he loosened his arm around her and straightened a little. “I will hunt the Kobra down, Fabian. For both of us, if you will let me.”
“Yes,” she said. “I want you to.”
“I can only do it if I know you are safe,” he said. “Anywhere near me will not be safe, not for a long while.”
“Will it ever be safe?” she whispered.
“With the Kobra gone, we will have a chance. Can you wait, Fabian? Will you?”
“For you, I would wait forever, if I know you will come back.”
Mischa groaned and kissed her. “Marry me,” he said softly, his lips brushing hers. “Then you know I will return.”
Her heart soared, but Fabian shook her head. “No, not yet. I mean yes, I will marry you. Just not now. I want it to be something for us to look forward to.”
“Because you yourself are not enough to make me abandon my country and fight through mortal enemies to come back to you…” Mischa’s tone was teasing.
Fabian shivered. “Then I will marry you. Now. Tonight. Only…”
Mischa raised his head so he could meet her gaze. He lifted his brow.
Fabian gripped his sweater and shook him. “You owe me a leg brace.”
He smiled. “I always pay my debts. And you, my lover, owe me a scarf.”
“When you are done hunting the Kobra, I’ll have it waiting for you.”
“I fully intend to collect,” he whispered and kissed her.
