Around a tiny tree, the children sang to Elohim, a song of hope and love.
Alric didn’t know if he believed in Elohim any more.
“They sing of hope, Ser Alric, because of you. You gave them hope.”
Taking a deep breath, Alric suppressed the retort that lay on his lips.
Sangrey had reappeared…yet again.
“It seems so,” Alric said. Kissing his daughter’s cheek, he handed her to Sae. “Go sing with the children. I want to hear your voice.”
Thea smiled.
Sae gave Alric a small nod and withdrew.
Alric waited until he saw his young daughter holding hands Shalendra. He turned to the small Tollin.
“What do you want of me now?”
Sangrey shrugged. “You do not do this for me, but for them.” Sangrey waved his hand to the Rentanga.
Alric saw before him the men and women he fought beside. Nabbe was in deep discussion with Kirshawe and Wardle. To their side, Gormar and Okeden laughed at one of the children chasing a goat. Both elves and men were as one.
Ewan alongside of Bereth talked with a reluctant Aurra.
“All who stand against Asmeodai, I fight for,” Alric said. “Does that include you?”
“It does.” Sangrey’s smile broadened. “It is good they celebrate now. Hard times are upon us. Asmeodai is about to unleash his fury.”
It was Alric’s fear. “We will face it.”
“You will, but there will be much death and destruction.” Sangrey nodded. “You hold questions about your wife…Bae.”
Alric said nothing.
“You have a right to know. She is not what she was,” Sangrey said. “She is no longer an elf, but a witch. As Tasar is now a warlock. I cannot see how Tasar became one, but I see that he can now control the weather…and has turned Bae.
“An elfin thrives on the warmth of nature, the warmth of love. Bae has lost the warmth. Her heart has harden. If you wonder if she will make an alliance with Asmeodai, I see that she will. She wants to rule Witheleghe. She will kill any in her way.”
“You need not warn me against Bae. You should warn her against me.”
“Aye, I see your hatred, but be warned she will try to use that against you. You have made powerful enemies, Ser Alric.”
Alric smirked. “Tell me something I don’t know.”
“Then I will,” Sangrey’s tone altered. There was no jest in his voice. “You have not seen the full extent of Asmeodai’s wrath. It is coming. You have survived much, Ser Alric, but nothing like what is about to descend upon us.”
“You tell me now all is for naught?” Alric questioned.
“Nay,” Sangrey said. “I tell you to keep your courage. Hold on until the children return…they are coming.”
“You have said that before,” Alric said.
“The visions of them become clearer every day,” Sangrey answered. “Prince Falco is there, but it is the girls, Princess Sareta and the one known as Kela, that will be our deliverance.”
“You talk nonsense, Tollin,” Alric contended. “I cannot trust you.”
“Aye, yet you do,” Sangrey said. “You became the dragon and saved us from certain death.”
Alric shook his head. “The children have been gone for over a decade. The portal is closed. If Asmeodai cannot open it, how can they?”
A smile returned to the Tollin’s face. “This I tell you true, Ser Alric. They will come. In that, take solace. For now there is hope.”
