“Non-voting shares,” Gus growled.
“Cool!” Hannah turned and shouted at her parents and siblings, who were waiting discreetly to one side. “Hey, come with us.” The small cruising party grew exponentially.
Gus glowered at Hikaru. “Isn’t Go a board game? Sort of like Chinese checkers?”
Hikaru looked pained. “Not exactly, Grandfather. But I would be happy to teach you. I have a game in my bag.”
“That’s good,” Gus said. “We’ll have plenty of time for the next two weeks, because with this many people in the crew I’m not lifting a finger.”

Author’s notes
Shooting a cannon: An important step in firing a cannon like those on the Alyssa is to cover the vent hole after the shot. In the interests of readability, we left that out intentionally because although we strive for technical accuracy in the story, we felt like we were pushing the limits of making the novel read like a textbook.
The Alyssa: Our smart-alecky sailboat was partially based on the tall ship Elissa, currently moored in Galveston, Texas. She is a museum ship at the Texas Seaport Museum. We drove down to Galveston and spent a full day going all over her. Nice restaurant next door, by the way.
About German translation: In the eighties we lived in Germany, stationed at Ramstein Air Base, and took a German language course. We learned how to say, “How much does that cost,” and “That’s too much,” but not much else. The translations in this novel are provided by DeepL, a German company whose translation services are said to accurately reflect the nuances of conversation. Foreign language dialog: Many authors try to follow the guidance of the Chicago Manual of Style in their writing and so do we. Surprisingly, CMOS has no advice on how to include translated text for the reader. We show the translation in italics after the quotes.
