“Not perfect. No.” Nairne brought his hand to her mouth and kissed his palm. “There’d be no learning from perfect. No fun. No fighting. No making up. But there will be great love and joy. Many beautiful children, lads and lassies, to bless their days, and each other to bless their nights. Your descendants will live long, healthy, productive lives. Surrounded by the people they love.”
Magnus threaded his fingers through her thick black curls, and, cupping the back of her head, drew her up on her toes. “Worth the journey, my darling?”
“Oh, aye. And a lesson hard learned. I punished myself as much as I punished you, my love. Five hundred years wasted.”
Magnus swung her up in his arms. “Then let’s not waste a moment more. I want you to myself, woman. Let’s go home.”
“To Scotland.” She rested her head on his brawny shoulder, content. “Aye, Magnus, my love. Let us go home. I’ve a thing or two I’ve learned over the years that I want to show you.”
The sound of their laughter lingered in the empty kitchen of Edridge Castle long after they were gone.
