Marilee knew the house well. It was beautiful, despite needing some TLC. “You’ve been giving this a lot of thought, haven’t you?”
“I was hopeful, Marilee, until I feared I might lose you. By the way, the house is big enough in case we decide to add to our family. Of course, it would take me several months to renovate it, so we could have a long engagement, say, three or four months, if you feel you need more time. Or we could get married tomorrow,” he added with a grin.
Marilee stared at him. “Is this is a marriage proposal?”
He pulled her closer. “I adore you, Marilee, and I want you with me, always. I want you to be my wife, if you’ll have me. I swear I’ll be a good husband and father. And I’ll set the best example I can for Josh. I already think of him as a son.”
Marilee nuzzled her face against him. She was only vaguely aware of passersby, of the scene they were creating in the maternity ward. The storm had passed, and she was a stronger person because of it. There would be others, because life was like that. But she knew who she was and where she belonged.
