Everything is going to be okay now, I say to myself.
You can relax.
Everything is going to be fine.
When I look up at Easton again, he kneels down and kisses me.
His lips feel like home now.
Soft and knowing.
I kiss him back.
His hands make their way down my breasts and my fingers dig into his strong, broad shoulders.
He kneels down before me and runs his hands down my stomach.
I spread my legs, welcoming his mouth.
A loud knock startles me.
The bathroom door swings open and four guards in black uniforms come in. Easton scrambles up to his feet.
“What the hell—“ he starts to say.
One of the guards opens the glass door, reaches in and physically pulls him out of the shower.
I try to stop him, but the others point their guns in my face and scream at me until I throw my arms in the air.
“Get off me!” he roars. “Do you know who I am?”
“Easton Bay, Prince of York, you are under arrest for the murder of Christopher Weider,” the guard says. “You have the right to remain silent. Everything you say will be used against you. You have the right to an attorney…”
Easton begins to shout at them, but the guard continues to read him his rights. It takes all four of them to extract him from the room.
I turn off the water, grab a towel and run after them.
Mirabelle meets me at the top of the stairs and blocks my exit.
“What is going on? Where are they taking him? He didn’t kill anyone!” I scream.
Mirabelle shakes her head, looking distant and tired.
“Who is Christopher Weider?” I ask, in a more calm and collected tone. “Easton didn’t kill anyone. Don’t they know that?”
“Yes, he did,” Mirabelle whispers.
I shake my head and repeat the word no over and over again.
“Christopher Weider’s nickname is Dagger, Everly. Easton killed him to avenge the death of his ex, Alicia.”
Quickly, my legs give out and I slide all the way to the ground.
No.
No.
No.
He didn’t do this.
Mirabelle gets down on the floor and wraps her arms around me.
“I’m so sorry, Everly,” she whispers. I turn around and bury my face in her shoulder.
“He didn’t kill Dagger. He was starting a new life with me,” I mumble over and over.
“There is no point to revenge. That’s what he said to me. That’s what he promised me,” I whisper.
Nodding her head, Mirabelle wraps her arms around me and holds me.
I want to run after him, to demand more answers.
But I can’t.
My body goes limp.
He couldn’t have killed him, I say to myself. He said that there was no point to revenge. He said that if his father were willing to let us start our life together, why would he jeopardize it?
And then something occurs to me.
Did he say all that because Dagger was dead already?
