In a brisk tone, Baba Yaga asked, “And what are you wearing?”

He wanted to ask how this related to his parole—but pissing off the supreme witch of all witches on the day he planned to ask the love of his life to marry him didn’t seem like a smart move. So he bit his tongue and retrieved his tux.

She snapped her fingers and his towel disappeared, to be replaced by his tux. If he hadn’t been distracted by the “why” of her visit, he might have been annoyed. At least she’d left the minions at home, so he missed out on flashing them his junk. That was something to be thankful for.

“Nice.” She made a circular motion with her finger.

But that was a step too far. He wasn’t a piece of meat for her inspection. His feet remained firmly planted. “It fits. Trust me.”

She sighed, and in a huffy voice said, “Fine. What’s the plan?”

      He crossed his arms. “No.”

      She raised an eyebrow.

“I’m asking the woman I love to spend the rest of her life with me. It’s a private matter.”

And, shockingly, no lightning bolt struck him. No disco lights blinded him. In fact, nothing at all happened.

And then the supreme leader of all witches smiled. “Consider your sentence commuted.” And she vanished with no fanfare at all.

Jackson stopped and took a breath. Then he picked up the ring box, checked the ring was still snugly tucked inside, and placed the box inside his coat pocket.

He was more than ready, and the woman he loved was waiting.

      About Cate Lawley

Cate writes and lives in Austin, Texas, (where many of her stories take place) with her pack of pointers and hounds. Cate has worked as an attorney, a manager, a tractor sales person, and a dog trainer, but writing is the hands-down winner. When she’s not tapping away at her keyboard or in deep contemplation of her next fanciful writing project, she's sweeping up hairy dust bunnies and watching British mysteries.

Cate also writes paranormal (Lost Library) & urban fantasy (Spirelli) as Kate Baray and thrillers (Beauregard) as K.D. Baray. Visit her website for more information: http://www.katebaray.com/
