“Okay. Sounds good.” Alicia laughed, a little envious her friend was so adept at lying when she’d had to work so hard at it.
Shelly scampered toward the kitchen as Alicia turned to face Brian.
“Thank you for putting up with my sister. And my friend. And me,” she added, knowing she had her own quirks for him to deal with.
“Anything. Always.”
For the first time in a long time, she believed in always again. On a whim, she laced her fingers with his and said, “I love you.”
“I love you.” He leaned in toward her lips as she anticipated what might be an inappropriate public display of affection. But for once, she didn’t care who saw or what they thought.
Maybe they’d be leaving this party earlier rather than later. She wasn’t opposed to sneaking out. Especially since they’d already solved Shelly’s problem.
“Hey, Brian. You need a beer?” Jason called from the doorway.
Brian halted his downward trajectory toward their impending kiss.
“Yeah. Thanks. We’ll be right in.” He kept his gaze on hers. “We’ll continue this later?”
He treated her to that dimple-laden smile that still made her weak in the knees.
She couldn’t wait to continue this later. And for a long time after that.
She smiled. “Definitely.”
