Alt couldn't believe that she was flat out refusing to tell him. She never did that. "Honey, are you all right? Are we all right?"
"Yes," she said, not able to look him in the eye.
"Well, I'm sorry, but this is blatant disobedience. You know that I'm perfectly fine with you going out with Andrea any time you want to, right, and doing whatever you want – as long as it isn't going to end up with either of you in jail?"
"Yes, Sir."
"And that, unlike your asshole last boyfriend…" He refused to even say Dunn's name. "I'm not jealous and insecure, and I'm not going to accuse you of cheating on me and use my own insecurities about that to punish you?"
"You're nothing like Dunn, Sir. You never could be."
That mollified him a little, but not enough. "But, Elle, honey, I can't have you disobeying me, can I?"
With a resigned sigh, Elle murmured, "No, Sir." She climbed over his lap.
Alt was at a loss about what to do, and that feeling was horribly unfamiliar to him. He always knew what to do. But something told him, something nagged away in the back of his mind, that he should let this one go.
But he couldn't, although he did give her a lighter spanking than he might have. When he was through, he held her chin in his hand. "I adore you, you know."
"I adore you, too."
"And I'm afraid I have to say that you are not allowed to go out with Andrea, since you refuse to tell me where you're going. You are to stay home all day. And you know I will call to check up on you."
"Yes, Sir."
"Good girl."
THE NEXT DAY, she tried to find someone who could go with Andrea, but everyone else was working. She had taken the day off to help get things ready.
So she went, knowing he was going to be pissed when she didn't answer the phone. She got a text right on cue, warning her that she was in big trouble, but she didn't answer that, either. She knew one of the guys at his company was going to keep him occupied until seven or so, when she would pick him up in a limo to drive him to the place she'd had to rent in order to fit all the people who wanted to celebrate his birthday with him.
Elle was waiting – in that same trench coat, only this time she had something on underneath it – standing beside the limo.
He stalked towards her as soon as he saw her. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be home!"
She simply stepped to one side and opened the door, and twelve of his closest friends all poured out, wearing party hats, honking horns, and throwing confetti all over him, which then descended into a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday.
Andrea stood beside Elle and looked up at the man she considered her brother from another mother. "You're not allowed to be mad at her. She put together this whole thing as soon as she found out that you never really got to celebrate your birthday as a kid, never had a party."
"Or a surprise party," he chipped in, clamping her to his side and whispering under his breath to her, "I'm so sorry for spanking you."
She flashed him a grin. "You can make it up to me tonight."
"Oh, believe me," he growled. "I will!"
The party was a huge success, even though there were no presents, at least not for him. Instead, she'd asked that everyone donate what he or she would have spent to his or her favorite charity. There was a big card, which they had all signed to him and told him to which charity they had contributed in his name.
They didn't get home until very late. She had one last surprise for him, which she gave to him when they cuddled up in bed. He had thanked her profusely – seven or eight long, languorous times with his mouth and his fingers – for a wonderful party, saying it one more time once he'd come up for air to lie next to her.
"You're very welcome, Alt." And then she put a small box on his chest.
"What's this? I thought there weren't supposed to be any presents?"
"Well, it's my prerogative to ignore my own rule, so there you go."
"Should I open it now?" he asked.
"Do the card first."
It was a simple one, with a picture of a bouquet of balloons on the front, and blank inside except for her beautiful script.
This was the best way I could think of to tell you how much I love and trust you.

The present was all but forgotten, as he turned her to him. "You love me?"
She could see him swallowing hard on all of that emotion.
"Yes, I do. Whole-heartedly. Unreservedly."
He shook his head. "I can't even believe that I'm so blessed to have found you."
His kiss made her toes curl, but made her heart unfurl fully within her chest, to an aching extent.
"Open your present," she suggested when he let her go, long, loving moments later.
He chuckled. "I'd nearly forgotten about it, already having been given the best present ever in my life."
He ripped the paper off the box and opened it slowly, moving aside the tissue paper to discover what it was, and he looked up at her, his expression deadly serious.
"You're sure about this?"
All Elle could do was nod as he retrieved his present from the box.
It was a relatively small, pink butt plug.
