  “I’m sorry. I thought I’d lost you, that you were repulsed by me.”

  “No.” She shook her head. “You believe me, don’t you?” She scanned his face.

  “Yes.” He did. When she’d thought she didn’t have a chance, she’d risked rejection. She’d had more courage than he had. “I love you,” he said. He’d spend a lifetime telling her, showing her, beginning right now.

  “I didn’t think I had a chance in hell of you returning my feelings, but I promised myself that if I ever saw you again, I wouldn’t waste the opportunity.” She paused. “I didn’t have a way to contact you. I don’t know who you work for.” Her voice and eyebrows rose in a question.

  Brock cupped her cheek. “I can’t tell you who employs me, Pia. It’s classified. But I promise that you’ll be able to reach me. Always and forever.” He kissed her. When he broke away, he reminded her, “Don’t we want to request an audience with the emperor?”

  She pulled him on top of her. “In a little while.” She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.
