Winds stirred as the great bird of prey soared from the sky. The water in the pool rippled and splashed as the bird approached, as if a helicopter was landing.

“Good thing this is an open aired dwelling or the windows would be broken,” Marissa yelled.

      “I know,” Daniel shouted back.

“Wait!” she yelled. She raced back inside the house and retrieved her dagger. This will be the dagger I use to carve away chaos. She grabbed a belt from the drawer and strapped it to her leg.

When Daniel saw her, he laughed. “Nice. My badass dangerous lover.”

“Ready to take a ride on my Coati-lumina?”

“Why not? At least I get to ride on her.”

As the trio took flight into the air over the Brazilian countryside, Amalia and Renata ran outside and waved from below.

“I thought they couldn’t perceive magic?”

“Those two have seen enough magic living with El Demonio,” Daniel answered, lifting his hand in response. “This is probably just one more thing.”

A strange quiver rippled up Marissa’s back. “We’re still going to have to deal with your father. I’m afraid I’m not looking forward to meeting him.”

“Yeah,” Daniel said, his hair flying around his face. “He’s been up to foul trickery, that’s for sure. I suspect he’s wickeder than I thought.”

Marissa grabbed her tangling mane with one hand. The other hand clutched the feathers of her escort’s back. “I should have brought a hair tie,” she yelled.

“What?” Daniel called. He gripped the quavering dog to his chest.

“I should have brought a hair tie,” she yelled louder.

“What?” Daniel shouted. “I can’t hear you over the bird’s wings and the wind.”

She shook her head. “Never mind, my dangerous lover. Let’s go home.” She glanced back at the disappearing house below her. “At least to one of them.” She now owned a coffee plantation, her Light Rebel self was restored, a gorgeous hunk of love rested by her side, and her dog had training wings. She knew nothing of the seeds of darkness, magic and mayhem, stirring to life and taking root in far off soil. She’d know soon enough.

      About the Author

The Fun Part: Calinda B was told early on that she should be a writer. She heard frequent praise for her writing, as well as her sense of humor. Scoffing at such admonitions and praise, she went on to pursue her life of adventure, chock full of the things that make up a well-rounded adventurous life: music (yup, she was a singer in a rock and roll band), dance (even performed hip hop in Russia), rock climbing (ever hung from a rock wall a few stories up? Yikes!), fire walking (taught high-ranking Moscow fire officials how to walk the coals), kayaking, scuba diving (she's in love with sharks), travel, and falling in love again and again.

The Daily Grind: An award-winning web designer and certified SEO specialist, Calinda B has worked in the Internet industry as a web page designer/developer since the early 1990's. She has also taught web site design and computer graphics at community colleges in Northern California. In addition to writing, Calinda B creates fine art and music, and enjoys scuba diving, kayaking, and bike riding. Calinda B makes her home in the Pacific Northwest with the love of her life and her two cats. She is currently working on her next book, The Beckoning of Broken Things
